I didn't take any notice of your tyre size before now DieselFumes.

So you're running 255/85 R16?

Don't you find one of your tyres rubs on your draglink when you're travelling at full-lock over uneven ground?

I'd be surprised if you don't because I had this problem with my narrower 235/85 R16 tyres until I tweaked my pitman arm closer to my chassis rail.

Keep in mind my truck has a small lift of 1.5-3" (Not sure) but it is deffinitely not stock ride height.

255/85 r16 on OEM splits, true measurement is 33"tall and under 9" wide- I took a lot of measurements before I purchased and it turned out perfect!

They do not rub lock to lock, I was a bit worried, everything clears just fine and I could not be more pleased. I am pretty sure this is the MAXIMUM tire size for my set up without changing rims and backspacing.

Haven't been able to or even thought about trying on uneven ground, but I will and try to post up some clearance pics.

OK got some pictures of the clearance I have when lock to lock on the drivers side only, as the passenger side is clear by a mile.

(although the wheel came back a little when let go at the end of the lock, the tires and pictures would be about 1/2"-3/4" closer to the steering links than the picture shows.)

Thanks DieselFumes.

It was your last pic on the right where my tyre touched my draglink.

Perhaps yours doesn't because of your lift as you say.

Another alternative is that your steering stops may be set more conservatively than mine. (Mine are set for the tightest turning circle I could get.)

Never check my stops, but it turns around pretty well for the long wheelbase, never have an issue with that. When I initially took the measurements, I thought it would be the other side being closer to rubbing, but maybe the lift and the stops (although I'm not sure mine have ever been moved from factory position)

I have almost been through one tank of fuel with them, no problems!

I was able to flex it some while at full steering lock and it did rub on the fro boltinthe picture, wonder if I can twistthat to the top?

It comes very close near the steering box, but clears, I will try the steering bolt twist or adjust bump stop.

Looks great, Toyota split rims are real easy to work on, unless they've been left out in the weather for years and the rust sets in. That said I'm going tubeless on my troopy for the moment, the splits will go on my BJ 42 I think. Also, I'd say that a ssuspension lift does seem to make a bit of difference in regards to rubbing on steering components, the HJ 45 I used to have never rubbed, even with 33x12.5x15 tyres.:meh:

nice write up,
when i got my first set of toyota splits years, hell decades, ago everyone preached to me about the dangers.
i said screw it and had a go. i love them HEAVY buggers.

thanks for posting.

Oh, a handy tip for installing tubes, use plenty of talcum powder in the new tyre carcass and give the tube a good sprinkle too, helps with the whole friction thing while the tyre is in use.

good idea on the powder... when I was installing one of the tube liners I ripped it, no more liners were available at the time, so I used 2 tire patches and glues them on the front and back of the liner and seems to have worked great! (Idea if your in a pinch.)

Thanks for the compliments on the write up- hope it can help someone in the future.

I love these splits!

I like reviving old threads, especially good ones like this one. Very useful for us split rim noobs.

Thanks for reviving this...amazing info on the the tyres and rims! I would love to go to narrower tyres on day on my HJ60. I find skinny tyres just look so cool on an off-road vehicle. Where I came from, all the off-roaders had the skinniest tyres.

Ive always been curious to know what these Simex jungle trekkers would be like on a landcruiser.
They do make them in the right sizes.
I dont have the right soil in WA to make use of them.

Not even for farm/mining use?;)

I saw a set in a 4wd shop the other day in a 9.00x16 size, sure looked mean. I think Gib009 had some Simex Extreme Trekkers on his BJ71 which are the same tyre with a slightly different tread.

They seem to be popular with the Malaysians and in other parts of SE Asia

Haha...so that's why I liked their look. Its all I ever saw the "serious" w-wheelers use. The name itself, Simex, sounds like something made by Sime Darby, and would probably mean its a Dunlop variant of some sort.

Crusher, why are they not allowed into Canada??

I don't see many HJ60s with skinnies though. I wonder if the body is too wide to look good on the skinnies.

I am switching back to my split rims and going to purchase the 255/85-16's for I hate the way my rig looks now with modern rims and 33x12.5 tires that sling me all over the road

Im using 235x85x16 and they are great. The narrower tyre has no disadavantages what so ever and can save you fuel.
But I wouldnt go back to split rims,Ill stick with my heavy duty balck ROH offroad rims and tubeless tyres.

Did you end up buying that alt from ebay?

No I didnt, I still have on my really want list though my alt is totally rebuilt. Yeah the 235/85-16's for me are great and I love the tires that I bought originally and still have (Dunlop radial rover R/T) but I really want something wider but not 12.5" and really want 33" tall and of course 16" so they fit on my splits. So with that being said it doesnt leave much of a choice but 255's but they are $$$
