Well brand new for me anyway.

Hi, I'm Gobo and I thought I'd introduce myself. I started off with an 80 series (gas) a few years ago, but now I'm moving into the big leagues:

Here's the story as I heard it:

A billionaire businessman from Texas was doing some of his business in Belize when he spotted a shiny new 1979 BJ-40 (left hand drive in Belize) and had to have it.

He bought it and had it shipped home, where it sat in his aircraft hangar in Dallas for the next 30 years or so. Then, about a year ago, a wealthy businessman in Florida happened upon it and offered to take it off the Texan's hands. Soon it was on a truck headed for Fort Pierce in the sunshine state. Now, a year later, the Floridian is thinning his herd and moving south to the keys and wanted the Cruiser out of his life.

Meanwhile I've been looking for a diesel land cruiser for some time, and this is one of only 2 LHD Diesels in decent shape that I found for sale. I found them both on the same day and called this one first. I was disappointed to hear that it had been sold just that morning and payment was pending. He wasn't interested in a better offer because the money wasn't really an issue; he was selling it to a friend for 18k.

I called on the other and after a conversation about it the guy said that he would take no less than 28,000, and that I should look into a RHD since that's a little more within my price range.

I emailed the first one, (in FL) and told him that if the deal didn't work out I'd be down there to buy it as soon as he gave the word.

Well, I'd been home minding my own business when my aunt and uncle stopped by on their way to Idaho where they are moving with their family, but due to an emergency my aunt had to fly on early leaving her car in Arkansas so they asked if I would drive it up to Idaho for them. I grabbed a change of clothes and 20 some hours later I was in Idaho and planning to fly home that afternoon.

Which is when I heard from the guy in Florida. So instead of flying back to Arkansas, I flew to Florida and bought the Cruiser. Several alligators, one manatee, and a minor torn diaphragm later I made it back to Arkansas.

I'll post some better pictures later too, especially of the stereo setup which is pretty slick.

oh and one other thing....
It's got 48,800 KILOMETERS on it. Almost 30,000 miles.

I also have a couple of questions, but I can't think of them now. I'll get back to you with those.

The one I do remember is this: If I take off the roof and the doors, is there anything left holding the windshield up? From the looks of it I need the roof on to hold the windshield up.

Great story Gobo  Thanks for sharing it.

Great stuff! (We all love pics.)

And just 48850km sounded so unbelievable for a 30-year-old vehicle.... but after hearing the history now and seeing more of the state of it .... I can well believe it!

I've arrowed here what you should have there (one each side) to hold your windscreen up.

what a piece of junk - there's no ash tray, the antenna is not there, and the non-oem secondary gas tank.

seriously, what a score!

your windshield is held up by 2 hex bolts accessible by removing your side window defroster tubes. the plastic handles bolts are only on the models without side defrosters.

No doubt you're right Jon.

I was wondering myself if that "luxury dash-padding package" alters the way the windscreen gets secured. (And it did seem hard to believe it could hide those big black knobs of mine.)

Like the extra gas tank .... I don't think that padding-kit/defrost-vent stuff could have been fitted by the factory back in 1979.

Sure looks nice though.

Hello,

Nice find, congratulations.

Regarding the padding/defrost vents kit, I remember seeing it factory installed, back in the day, complete with roll cage, separate front seats and smaller rear seats. Yours got it all.

I remember Cruisers with factory unpadded dashboards, like Tom's, as well.

Maybe the paddiing/defrost vents/roll cage was a "luxury" option of sorts?

Is that a glow switch?

Sweet find! Congrats!

Why do you want to take the top off? I'll bet it has never been off and IMO would not...

Welcome!

Definitely not installed on all trucks. Here's my '76 HJ-45... I'm sure mine didn't have ANY luxury options on it.

different countries had different features installed.
in NA the auto industry was forced to installed "crash" protection. this was motivated by the insurance companies due to payment outlay for in vehicle injuries. this came out roughly the same time as seat belts became mandatory installation in vehicles.
personaly, i like the looks of the naked dash and love the old HUGE latch down handles. WAY cooler than the bolt system of the 1970s...

Awesome! Pristine shape too!

A few things look diff than what I would expect of a Central American LC: 1st - speedometer in Miles & Kms, 2nd - heater, 3rd - dash. I would say 99% of LCs for third world countries of the era came stripped off (including drum front brakes and such.) Having a dash pad like that on your Cruiser over here sets you apart!! Of course there are always exceptions with regards to features.

Congrats on an awesome rig!

This beautiful truck has an aftermarket auxiliary tank, exhaust system, and front bumper. Other than that it looks like a stock '79 Canadian spec BJ40. I have one that I bought brand new in 1979.

Gobo Fongo's truck even has the little plastic vents under the rear opening windows which people on other threads have said is a Canada-only spec'd item.

I wish my truck still looked that good.

I suspect if you follow up the VIN umber on that rig it is a Canadian rig: vents on the roof below the side windows, speed in Kms and Miles, heater with side defrosters and padded dash - all add up to Canadian rather than South American.

VERY nice rig, wherever it is from. I am envious.

Josh

One way to mnake sure... do you have a screen shade in front of the rad? if so, definitely canadian!

Example picture? What is a shade screen?

there is a pull nexted to the center bib mount for a pull down radiator sceen for cold weather

BJ42_006.sized.jpg

see the bolt nexted to the mount and a small square peice nexted to it thats the lower mount and pull ... dont have any pics of it down
