Long story short (I'll follow up in other threads I started), I've received two Bosal y-pipes (P/N 099-128) that haven't fit properly at the manifold end (see image) and I would like to buy from a different manufacturer.

From RockAuto, I've got two choices.

Walker (Part # 54567) for $303.79 or EASTERN CATALYTIC CONVERTERS (Part # 40437) for $265.89

I'd like to order the option which would give me the best chance at success. Anyone have a recommendation for which company would deliver the better quality product?

I'm driving around without a y-pipe (just the manifold) and I'd like to place an by the weekend so I don't continue to annoy my neighbors.

Thanks

FWIW - I replaced mne with a set from Eastern.... fit was crappy, I have gasket issues at the header. Also, within 1 year the Cat shields rusted off...

I used these ,https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/409888-replaced-cats.html They lined up well and Have been pretty good so far

Opps , looks like they are sold out

I see this one SL 1213038 Catalytic Converter | Auto Parts Warehouse, its cheap , who knows if its any good

Thanks, Koffer, I checked out the Davico website and they don't have any part numbers listed for a TOYOTA LANDCRUISER. They do have some part numbers for the LEXUS LX450 and list them for "6 cyl. Ultra Load" and "6 cyl Standard Load". Interesting. Thanks for following up on your second suggestion, but I was looking for some confidence from past experience.

With your feedback, I went with the Walker. Thanks for posting. [FONT=&quot]Walker is part of Tenneco, which also does National, Moog, Anco, and others, so they are pretty well known.

I'll know next week if the Walker fits.

YW,
Subscribed to see how the walker cat fits..

Sorry to hear that the bosal y pipe didn't work out. I had the same fitting issues with the y pipe... I ended up fitting one pipe then ratchet straping the other in place and inserting the studs to the manifold. Then inserting the felpro gaskets and bolting it tight together while strapped....

On a side note, I did't pass NH inspection last week because the resinator pipe did not line up with the muffler pipe and was leaking.... Had to grind the resinator pipe because the flange had been welded at the wrong angle.

I am local to you, I have my original y-pipe without cat. You are welcome to borrow this and have a local welder replicate the pipe if this helps.

FWIW, I bought the Davico y pipe after talking to Koffer about the good experience he had. My experience wasn't so good. I think they have a consistency problem in manufacturing. My y- pipe bolted right up, but the flange wouldn't seal to the exhaust manifold.

Had it on and off 3 times. I tried the gaskets they supplied and Toyota OEM gaskets and it still wouldn't seal. Finally took it to an exhaust shop figuring I was the problem because the y-pipe fit so well. They couldn't get it to seal either so they ended up cutting the y off my original OEM pipe an welding it to the Davico front cat.

FWIW, my bosal replacement y-pipe bolted right up without any issues.

Landtank is looking into a full system replacement. Pm him he might be able to help. I know OEM price is about $1k.

I got the Walker y-pipe this week and got it installed.

PROS:
* The part is stamped "Made in Canada" and, overall, the weld quality looks better than the Bosals.
* Bends are cleaner than the Bosal.
* The coupling at the junction of the three pipes is more precise (more form-fitting) than the Bosal.
* There is a brace installed in the "y" (see image)

CONS:
* It didn't line up perfectly at the manifold (see image), but I was able to spread the "y" with a crowbar and get the flanges on the studs.
* It didn't mate up with the second cat very well, but the flange holes could be aligned with a punch.
* Could be wrong, but I don't believe that the O2 sensor studs are easily replaced as they appear (and feel from the inside) to be welded in.
* There is one area where the flange is not completely welded and it leaks from this pinhole (see image). It's not noticeable from in the cab, though. I should have fixed it (finish welding it or applied paste) prior to install, but I was short on time.
* The cat cover was dented/bent on both sides; not sure if this happened during shipping.

As an aside, when the OEM y-pipe fractured (that was 6 weeks and two Bosal y-pipes ago...), one of the studs broke off in the manifold (couldn't get it with heat, penetrating oil, vise grips, etc.).

I ended up drilling out the broken piece of stud with progressively larger diameter bits until I was able to pick out the thin shell with a punch.

Due to the odd shape of the manifold, it would be hard to fixture properly in a drill press. Instead, in the drill press, drilling a perpendicular pilot hole in a scrap piece of square stock to guide the hand drill came in really handy. I still had my fingers crossed while drilling, though.

Got a bosal here as well, I still have an exhaust leak at the manifold flange. I will have to cut and reweld the flange when warm weather permits. The flange towards the front of an engine fits good but the back one has a gap.

In addition to the flange geometry being off, the gaskets I used with the Bosal failed after just a week (AP EXHAUST Part # 9024 Exhaust Pipe Flange Gasket; Gasket-Catalytic Converter). All of the packing broke loose from the gasket. It could have been from mishandling as I tried to close up the gaps.

I went with OEM gaskets with this Walker install and all is well so far (see image below of used AP EXHUAST gasket vs. new OEM gasket).

While I'm typing, I'd like to mention that RockAuto was really good with support for the two Bosals that didn't fit. They got back to me quickly and had commonsensical replies.

This "third times a charm" (BOSAL >> BOSAL >> WALKER) y-pipe replacement has made me respect Toyota OEM even more. Good stuff. I wish I had the $1000+ to spend on an OEM y-pipe.

Awesome pics, thanks for the detailed info. Glad it worked out for you. It was nice to know that OEM gaskets will indeed work with an aftermarket exhaust. The Toyota mating flanges are far superior than the usual flanges that I see.

Just wondering how your Walker parts are holding up after over a year of being installed?

It's funny, I was looking at the y-pipe a few minutes before your message popped up. :hhmm:

The Walker y-pipe definitely rusts more than Toyota OEM. I've also sprung a leak at one of the flanges (not sure if that is my installation or the part).
