Just like the title says, just got my FJ60 a couple weeks ago and I'll be taking it in for a tune up and fluid replacement soon. However, the few times I've driven it, there's a strong gas smell. It sounds like it also has a small exhaust leak but odor is definitely un-used gas. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

And there's no leak on the ground or wet areas around carb after driving.

sounds like your gas tank is not venting like it should be! i would check to make sure your charcoal canister is hooked up right!! do you hear a big phoof when your take your gas cap off after driving??

I'm on the same boat.

The smell, at least in my case, seems more pronounced after I fill it up with gas.

I have just been leaving the windows cracked open to make it less nauseating.

as said above, check your charcoal cansiter. Search "charcoal canister" and a lot of info will come up about the correct orientation of the vent lines.

But also make sure your gas cap is sealing correctly. I had a very strong raw gas smell in the cab whenever I filled up and it was b/c the cap was not sealing completely. Replaced it and the issue is gone. One of those little things that you don't always think about...

I had the same problem. I discovered that my Dad had a cheap, knock off gas cap. I ordered an OEM cap from SOR and the problem seems to be solved. I need to order a charcoal canister just in case it needs replacement.

Not that I'm the one started the thread, but thanks for the input! :D

I'm gonna look for this thing called "charcoal canister" (No idea where it is or what it looks like... I'm "guessing" that it might resemble something like the A/C receiver thingy), hopefully under the hood and not near the fuel tank.

If a new fuel cap can be still ordered I'll have to talk to CDan about it.

I'll report back with my findings.

Thanks again, gents!

Just did a search and read about ten threads about the charcoal canister stuff.

I'm gonna try to locate it under the hood tomorrow and see what it looks like, but I don't have an air compressor, so I'll have to see if I can remove it and have it tested.

I'll also have to check the fuel filler neck and make sure that it's free of cracks, etc...

Thanks. When I had it smogged, the technician tossed the original because the rubber seal disintegrated. He sold me an aftermarket that sealed properly. I'll get an OEM cap and check the charcoal canister. Call me stupid but what's a "dizzy"?

Sorry. Gas cap

also check....

Also check the rear. Pop off the panel on the rear PS cargo area, behind that is a unit with lots of hoses and stuff. (technical, I know). check those hoses, etc.

Especially check that if you are getting gas smell after filling up.

I know the 1987 had a recall for the gas tank and the hoses and stuff behind the rear panel that Cardinalfj60 just talked about. If you call Toyota with your VIN you can find out if your truck ever had the recall and when it was done. If it never had the recall head on over to your local Toyota dealer and have them do the work first for free before you start running all over the gas lines and getting into the carb. Good Luck

Would any local dealer be able to access this info and tell me without having me explain it to them or should I be calling elsewhere???

Check exhaust leak, check running rich... also check condensor and associated plumbing behind rear passenger cargo panel.

BTW, the smell was pretty bad after I filled it up and parked for an hour or two.

So, I removed the PS rear panel and saw a puddle of liquid. :crybaby:

The pic was taken after I had soaked it up with a paper towel.

The smell had a fairly strong smell of gas.
However, I have a hole in the roof along the rain gutter about directly above the fuel neck is located.

So, I cleaned up the area the best I could and headed over to the gas station to top it off again.

This is what looked like after I cleaned it up.

And I slowly topped it off while having my son look by the filler neck and the area below.

And to my relief, this is what it looked like after I topped it off only with a little over one gallon, as well as after a short drive home.

My theory in why there was a puddle was the rain water coming in from the hole along the roof/rain gutter. (I hope)

I'm gonna leave the panel off and keep an eye on it for the next few days.
It might even rain, so I might be able to get a visual on the dripping water.

BTW, what is the brown cardboard/wooden sheet in the side below?
And does mine look sufficient?(I see some moisture damage from the past)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Great info. I'll check blind the PS panel

I'd guess a dealer could look that up, but if you search here, there is a phone number you can call at Toyota and they can tell you if the tank was replaced...

Good luck!
