Got a pair of the new revised version of the SOR slider windows for my 60. Any advice before I tackle the install?

See if you can find a pair of Aussies instead. Seriously, I like SOR but their older sliders don't fit very well & the new ones look like flat glass just like the original ones. The Aussies are curved like your fixed quarter windows.

I can only recommend the method I used--I paid a a professional to install them. Since neither the SOR or the Aussie spec ones are a simple drop-in replacement, it was worth every penny. Also, when I say 'professional' I don't mean your local glass shop, I mean Land Cruiser professional .

Big -

Being a professional glass-shop guy I can tell you that we installed more types of glass than any Land Cruiser specialist could or would. Sounds like the fact I have 2 60s & have been working on others' for nearly 20 years probably doesn't mean much to you.

It helps to know "old tech" auto glass as that's what these are.

Well, I will forge ahead armed SOR instructions. Keep you all posted.

Is there any chance you'd be willing to scan and send me a copy of those instructions? I have a set of sliders sitting in the garage that I'm debating install on, and I'd like to see what they sent for instructions. Please? :D

My advice would be to return them before you mark them up trying to install them and cant.

As bad as i wanted these too work, the flat glass just wasnt going to cut it. There was an inch gap that needed to be flattened, and per SOR instructions you do it with a hammer. After a lot of beating and a barely any flattening, i gave up.

I hope your install goes better, but mine could not have been done without serious sheet metal bending.

You can download them directly from the SOR site, link next to the product number.

Hmmm...I had a seen this new (CR Lawrence) version on 60 in a parking lot a few months ago. It looked great, did you have new versions?

Oyajijon ... If you decide against installing the sliders, PM and let me know what you would sell them for.

Good Luck.

Josh

I'd forgotten about flattening out the vertical pinch weld for the old SORs - a major kludge.

C.R.Laurence is the largest glass part/accessory/tool supplier in the US, probably the world. Their stuff is very good, but if the glass is flat something has to give because the original quarter windows are curved in the vertical plane. Either the frame must be curved or the pinch weld flattened.

OyajiJon - keep them the windows, they went in no problems, no gaps, looks factory and no big headaches. Very happy with the product so far...sorry Beams37 ;)

I'll post pictures of the install later tonight.

Stock Window from the interior

Tapped my black gasket insert in per SOR instructions. Most will probably have the chrome ones.

Interior stock corner gasket

Added a few extra tools to the install list (bike tire levers, visit Oro Valley Bikes if you're in Tucson), We went around the whole window, seemed to help some and felt better about using the plastic levers than a screw driver.

Help from a big screw driver.

We got the corner out first.

It's popped out now.

Tapped the headliner down with duck tape. The first side we did kept getting it caught with the rope as we pulled it around the window to seal it.

You can see how curved the pinch weld is. You'll need to straighten that out. (click the img it would rotate it on the link)

After alot of pounding you get it straight. Instructions say to use a 2x4...no sure how that big of piece of wood could be used in such a small area, I opted to something smaller.

SOR instructions say to start at the bottom as you over lap the string there, we did that once or twice and then opted to try starting from the top. That seemed to work for us better. No pics of that, as it goes pretty quick and the window is slippery for the soapy water (again per SOR instructions).

it might look like the gasket isn't even, but it is. When i had repainted some overspray got on the window gasket seals, so it just looks wavy, but to everyones surprise they went really good.

The Tools, (not in picture is the bike tire levers), also help to soak the rope in the soapy water

Any questions?

BTW- the wife says this was my fastest part install in Land Cruiser ownership history. I almost didn't wanna tell her I was done 'cause I had blocked the whole day for "cruiser time."

S&S, thanks for the info! I've been sitting on them for a while. My contact at TLC said they stopped selling the sliding windows because they inevitably came back with leaks. Please post up after it rains...in Arizona. :D Very nice install and write up!

Josh, if I decide to let them go, I'll contact you first. If I let them go, it will be for a price that I'm quite sure you won't refuse...
