This morning when I jumped in my rig and headed into town I noticed that my windsheild wipers were running slower then normal. I made a stop, and when I got back in to start her, there was a little delay then she started. Drove to the next stop, wipers seemed fine at first, then slowed a little. Stopped at a gas station to return a battery, and when I came out, she wouldn't turn over at all. Got a jump and started right up and ran fine. started home and noticed that the voltage meter was pegged at the bottom...nothing. The guy at the station said it sounded like the alternator...and that would be my first guess as well. Up until this point I've had no problems. Anyone disagree?

I've been calling around and Tuesday is the soonest I can see getting one. Btw, I was asked if it was a 40, 45, or 50 amp alternator. I don't see anything on the current one which will tell me that. I don't see anything in the 2F Engine manual either unless I'm missing it. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks,
MT

Howdy! I would take it to a parts store and have them test the alt and the bat. Could be either one, so I would get a solid answer before spending the $$. John

27700-38100 is the PN for the voltage regulator.

The PN for a toy reman 55A alternator is 27020-61071-84.

If the belt is spinning the alt and chassis voltage is below 13V, then the alternator is not charging.
Could be alternator, regulator or wiring issue.

WTF?? $195?
That must be a typo.

From trademotion:

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
270206107184 $109.77 $10.00 $85.07
Electrical - Alternator - Alternator - 55 amp
55 amp 1981 - 1987

Toyota List is $110. You should get a discount off that.

277003810084 $50.68 $0.00 $39.28

Thank you for the info.

$195.76 is what the guy said over the phone earlier today. That didn't sound right because I could have sworn they said $109 and change on Saturday before we knew what amp alternator it took. I did some checking around after I posted, then saw your post and called them back. The guy I talked to today mis-quoted, it's $109. and change. They say they have to get it out of L.A. so they'll have it in three days.

Also, turns out the battery that was in the rig when I bought it was too small. I replaced it with the correct battery yesterday...which is a heck of a lot bigger then the one that was in it.

144a GM alternator... go for it!
Be careful, that's enough juice to overpressurize the wiring.
Then the smoke will squirt out somewhere, and electrics don't work once the smoke has leaked out. ;p

I replaced the wire harness seals with the Marlin double sided ones.. should be good for the additional load... plus I use the good "red" gasket tape on all of the elbows.

Please no, for the love of god.

I spent a good bit of time and money ironing out the previous owners GM alternator drama that he put into my '62.
Stay Stock, stay sane. Pity the person who may inherit the rig.

Sorry for your nightmare...

I put a GM alternator into my 85FJ60. I got all of my info (and little bits and pieces) from the nice folks at Wrangler NW - Power Products. They are very helpful.... (and no, I'm not affiliated).

I sourced a new 140a alternator from a 98 GMC pick-up with a 350 motor.

I bought a bracket adapter, pulley and plug adapter (GM to toyota) from WranglerNW to complete the kit.

No problem, no wiring mess for anyone to sort out later.

MT-PTK - When you say the Volt Meter was reading next to nothing does that imply that it was reading something?
