Does any one have A/C in their 40? I picked up this 76 with A/C in it. Not sure I really want it. I am looking at ways to put P/S in but the smog pump or the A/C has to go. Does anyone have A/C and use it?

Is there a market for a used A/C system?

I have AC and its my vehicle of choice in the summer. Cools better then the 80.

I live in AZ and you dont drive anything in the summer if you dont have ac:D

Hey, somebody in AZ with AC in a cruiser! What system do you have? Did you put it in yourself? I've been thinking about putting AC in mine (just got it a few months ago). Thanks in advance!

I suspect it is factory but do not know how to tell. I purchased the 40 from a friend who bought it in 82 from original owner with 29K on it. The A/C was on it then.

The truck sat outside for years. Just ordered a new gas tank for it. Will try and get it running in the next week or 2. A/C probably needs a charge to see if it works.

Not sure what it is worth. If I decide to sell it, I will post it here. PM me with an offer if you want.

The original A/Cs in the 40s sat underneath the glove box on the passenger side. Unfortunately they don't blow out through the heater vents or through the windscreen demister vents, which is a pity. If you run your heater and aircon at the same time through the windscreen vents it demists almost instantly.

There is a bolt in control with two sliders that hangs down underneath the dash.

I have one in mine but I am using the aircon compressor as an air compressor at the moment. I am looking at ways to mount two compressors in there.

You'll know if it is an original Toyota A/C if it says "Nippondenso" on it anywhere.

I live in middle Australia and bajeezus you can use the A/C here on the warm days.

Milo,

To add a 2nd compressor on a 40 that has stock AC you can:

1. Remove the Smog pump if you have one (down low driver side)
2. Move Alternator to Smog pump location it will fit the smog pump bracket with a few spacers
3. Put a new Sanden AC compressor where Alternator was. You gotta beat the one alternator tensioning bracket flat, fab a small support strut and bracket.

No factory air prior to 79...you have aftermarket, unless someone sourced a factory one for you. Dead giveaway is the sliding controls mounted on the dash above the handbrake...if your controls are on the unit, it's not factory.

As far as what keeps things cooler, does anybody know how the stock unit compares to the aftermarket ones (ie, vintage air, etc.)?

The stock unit did great with the hard top and doors on. I can't comment on aftermarket.

My '76 has a port installed york a/c system in it. It will freeze you out when it is wide open.

I put Freeze12 in my 60 as a direct replacement for R12. no license needed to buy it. $10 a can at the local True Value Hardware store. No conversion needed as with R134A. It runs about 38 degrees.

I think I have decided to seel the A/C in the 40. I will get pics this weekend and verify if it is Toyota or aftermarket. After reading the posts, it is porbably aftermarket.

Thanks for all of the input.
