I have a set, but due to my aluma-tub and bed liner finish I had to grind them a little to get them to fit. I recycled an old set of speakers when I was playing around with it, no depth problems. Lucky I guess:meh:
I didn't like how they blocked off access to the kick vents, so I scrapped them before I drilled holes in the tub.

As far as good vs bad speakers, just the design of the speakers. Used to work in an install bay, and that was very common problem if you had a salesperson that didn't do their job. Old boy would get the phat beats he REALLY wanted on'y to find out they don't fit anywhere in their car:doh:

Just measure out how much room you have, then go to any manufacturer'd website, and they'll have all the dimensions.

Good car apeaker manufacturers, Alpine, Infinity, Polk Audio

Shane,
I looked at these on one of our club members FJ40. It's a supper nice design. I was impressed. Your not going to get super clear crisp audio quality because of road noise in a FJ40 anyway. You should really have a rear baffle on speakers anyway, so improve the sound, but in a FJ40 who cares. ;)

Those look pretty awesome. Concerning speakers, depends on how much you want to spend. Those mentioned above are all pretty nice. Also depends on if you want to run an amp or not. Bet those Momo's linked above would sound a heck of a lot better with an amp attached. Good luck!

Anyone running these?

I have a set and the speakers that were delivered to me are too deep.

Best quality speaker?

Shane

Can you just add a spacer ring?

You will never get any mid base from an inclosure that small. But of course a 4 1/2 speaker isn't gonna have much to give. I would think in a situation where you wanted to have speakers in the front that you use seperates. A 4 1/2 mid in that location and a tweeter mounted facing you on the dash. Highs and mids need to be facing the listener as much as possible while base is omnidirectional.

I'm running a 400w Clarion amp with 4 speakers. Its a must! Theres no way your gonna hear the sound running down the road with the top off without an amp IMOP. Momo's definitely need an amp. I've had a lot of stereo's in boats and my cruisers. Marine grade stuff is the only way to go. Its gonna get wet eventually.

x2 on the blocking of the vent... I don't love the look personally

They don't block off the vent, you just have to use your hand to open them..

check out Auto speakers, boat speakers, home theater speakers. Palmdale, CA

these are formally Babb speakers if your are familiar with that name. Great sound and huge magnets. They are completely waterproof...in fact they recommend cleaning them by completly submersing them. I have a pair of the 4". One in the stock AM speaker location and one in the back wall of a tuffy console facing the rear seats. I wanted to try this setup before going with the kickplate mounts. You will likely need to come up with a spacer to get the hole narrowed up and get some additional depth.
