Hi,

I am in the process of installing my recently JimC rebuilt '79 carb...However I am also trying to figure out what the PO did as far as vacuum lines and desmogging efforts.

JimC had to fix a few things that were incorrect w/ from another rebuild attempt.

The first shot is before. The 2nd shot is after (pic doesn't do it justice). Green Wire Mod included by JimC.

Final pic...Is there something wrong with this pic? From the desmog schematics that I've seen it looks like a BVSV has been removed.

Another question I have...I have read (but can't find it again) that '79 carbs are different than prior carbs and are more similar to the early fj60 carbs. Does anyone know the difference?

Another difference that I have noticed from the desmog schematics is that the diaphragm on the distributor assembly is capped at the outside nipple. Is this correct for the '79?

Through some sort of miracle, I got my FJ up and running. I am nearly 100% certain that I don't have everything connected correctly. I made some guesses from pics that I took prior to removing my carb.

So somebody please correct me where I am wrong.

In the below image of the carb insulator pad, between the 2 visible carb mouting posts, there is an open port by the red colored tubing (plugged port).
Where does this go? Currently it's connected to a line that goes back to my BVSV port (pic #3 from first post). Is this correct?

My 2nd BVSV line is connected to the EGR R Port on the Carb as shown in the famous schematic that is always referenced.

Next I have what I'm guessing is a VSV that is attached to the driver's fender (below in pic#2). This is currently attached to the line that goes back to the diaphragm on my distributor (pic from 2nd post).

Finally, I have a piece of tubing that starts from the bottom of the air cleaner box. This is now connected to an open port above the carb on the air cleaner box (pointing towards the driver's fender).

I can't imagine this is correct so please advised how I should fix this. What can I remove and plug?

Thanks

Yes, a BVSV is removed. Common w/ desmog. The remaining BVSV is used for canister purge. If canister or purge valve is missing, then that BVSV can also be removed.

The only functional difference is the 81-later carbs have the added HAC fitting on idle circuit.

It will probably give too much advance in that configuration. Try connecting vac to outer nipple, then set base timing to 10*BTDC.

No. Cap both of the fittings on the carb insulator.

No. The carb port should be connected directly to the dissy advance.

I think you are actually referring to the decel fuel cut vacuum switch. The green wire mod is already done, rendering it redundant. Remove & discard.

Dunno about that. Doesn't sound correct.
On the AC body, there should be a vac hose from the HIC to the vac pot on the snorkel.

HTH.
