You talked me into it--now what do you think of this one?

you are missing the point, Doug.

Assume that the truck has cats that are illegal by Calif standards but passes the "smog test" upon sale because the tech didn't check the cats.
Then 2 years later, at the next inspection, the other tech, says "sorry, these are not OEM cats" and fails you. Then what? You say "it passed the test 2 years ago" and you think ARB will say "oh, suuuure, sorry, our mistake, you can keep them..." ?

as you say, "whatever"....

Do you actually know anyone this happened too? Does seem a little paranoid to me as well. You could take this same thought process to the extreme and they can say the headgasket was replaced like you were talking about, but it fails a year later because they used a non Toyota 2 piece gasket. You have no recourse there either.

Forget asking. Check for bubbles in the overflow at 3k RPM as described in many posts. If it's good then don't worry about whether it's the original or a replacement. You'll never be lucky enough to find a nice truck with locks and a properly replaced HG.

Never say never.

My 1995 with 105K miles (locked) in excellent condition had the HG PM replaced by Slee, plus all the other major 90K PM by Slee, plus driver's seat rebuilt with new leather, plus OME, Slee Sliders & skids, and Garvin roof rack...all for less than a stock '97 would have cost with 150K miles. PO was a maintenance fanatic...truck was 3 miles from my house...seller had financed through my bank...bank did all the sale and loan paperwork...entire transaction took 20 minutes total on the day after I closed on my new house and needed a second vehicle...I put the entire purchase plus tax into the loan for a nice low payment over 4 years.

But I'm lucky like that :flipoff2:

yes, I do know folks who had to endure this.

Ken, don't you think there is a difference between a random mechanical replaced part failing later as in a HG per your example and an illegally modified smog system that would violate the rules that they are checking for every 2 years during a formal required inspection and might cost $2K to fix?

Me, I'd ask the question about the cats upfront. Paranoid? Whatever...

enough for me on this topic.

JAG, good luck with the purchase!

Believe it or not--this exact thing happened to me with my Range Rover. I bought it in Colorado, drove it to Cal and it passed its initial smog. 2 Years later I was told it never should've passed the first time. The fire that totalled it occurred before I bother to find out the cost to fix it.

Nobody should underestimate the fascism of the California Air Resources Board. It sounds like you already know to take no chances with those monkeys. They are worse than the IRS.

Hell we shipped a brand-new 50-state legal 2006 Lincoln Navigator to a customer in California and it took them 4 months and 3 trips to the DMV and the emissions gestapo to get it tagged. And that was a brand new truck.:censor:

it's as simple as this...

the vehicle is currently in CA.
justagirl is currently in CA.
the owner claims it passed CA smog.

if you're paranoid to the e9999 level, take the rig to your local smog referee for an inspection of the cats before you purchase...it's as simple as that.
what's with all the hand-wringing?

If you want to be super secure, just contact the smog referee (2nd box down on this link) if you want real info, rather than paranoia. FWIW, I had some decent dealings with the smog referee a few years ago when I had to get an old Bronco to pass -- they were really reasonable, IMO. The problem that most people have is that they go to the wrong place, then end up getting the run-around. The smog referee is group you want to deal with first.

Justa,

I'm one town over from the "Truck" in question... If you like I could check her out for ya, or get one of the other "cruiserheads" around here to look into her for ya.

Just an offer. PM me if you like.
