So I redid some wires and got a spark to the dizzy... heard some rattling underneath as I cranked it. Pumped the clutch several times, and hear the pop of the slave cylinder as it shoots the plunger out! The clutch fork has come loose again, despite the installation of some hub-to-fork clips. How the hell am I supposed to hold that thing in place permanently ??? The clips don't seem to work. I haven't been able to wheel for 2 months and its startin to kill me slowly...

In the middle of the fork there is a clip that holds it onto the raised pivot/bearing thing that it rocks against. Is your clip broken, or is it not engaging?

There's supposed to be a return spring on the clutch release fork as well (at least on the one's I've seen). It tends to hold the slave actuator in contact with the release fork.

That's a good point. That's there, isn't it?

OK, that spring isn't there! I don't see exactly how it connects, but i do have an extra one from a clutch kit that came with the truck... that little ball pivot that the fork is clipped to is connected and working. So now two of the ends are nailed down. My question now is, how do I keep the two prongs of the fork on the two "ears" of the TO hub? My problems begin when I miss those ears. The two clips that hook into the hub ears and then kinda just push against the fork fly off as soon as I push in the clutch. Do I even need those?

Thanks for your help guys

I've got some pics of the situation if someone would let me know how to post those, I can't quite figure it out. They are JPG's under 90 KB so I am not quite sure what the problem is. I even changed them to GIF and tried

Havin all kinds of troubles today, arg.

Have you recently changed trannys? The release forks are NOT the same for all the different trannys. Usually the ball that the fork clips to holds the fork real well. There should be a spring clip on the fork that holds it to the ball joint.

Mike, the clips on my setup poke into little holes on the hub, and would be very hard to take off. I think your return spring is your big problem, if that was missing.

Email me your pictures and I'll post them if you like. Don't know why your pictures wouldn't post.

OK, I think I got this bad boy figured out (again)... looked at the pics on Specter and it looks like the only component to my clutch that isn't 4-speed is the shift fork Mine is stamped, the other one looks different. Guess the PO left it there when he did the swap and I was too ignorant to figure it out till now. I have driven it for 2 years without that spring on the outside and it never gave me problems till the slave cylinder wore out and needed replacing. I am putting up a want ad for that 4sp clutch fork, so if you have one I need one by this weekend! Thanks!

And a big AH-HA!

Similar problem

Is there a difference with how the clutch fork clips into the throwout bearing hub for different years? The truck is a 73 but i believe it has a later 4 speed and i don't see how the clips i just bought from toyota are supposeed to work. does anyone have some pictures?

Yes, the clutch forks and TO bearings are different, and you have to use the correct fork for your TO bearings. Clips are different too...and the change date was in '74 I believe, when they changed from the 3-finger clutch to the diaphragm clutch.
No, I don't have a pic.

did the clip betweeen the fork and the TO bearing hub change orietation? My TO bearing hub has clip holes axial to the input shaft, while my fork has holes that run tranverse to the input shaft.

does any one have pics?

These might help? They are from my 4sp tranny with 3 sp clutch components install.

I have a forged fork with drilled holes. And my bearing hub seems to be drilled 90* from how yours is.

Ooops just realized you have 4 sp clutch stuff...

I don't have a pic, but i've been dealing with clutch adjustment on my 76. the clips are u shaped with a very small inward tang on one end. they slip into the top and bottom fo the fork, and the inward tang catched on a hole in the t/o bearing ears.

Not the greatest pic, but here's the 4spd setup
