The frame landed today, and except for a couple of parts missing that I thought should be there, it looks good. I will have to change the motor mounts for sure which sucks, but not the end of the world.

Heaps better than my old frame for sure. I was surprised to see that the steering dampener is mounted the same for a RHD and a LHD..need to research that one.

So here are some pics of the new frame. I was disappointed that it didn't have 3B motor mount brackets, but no big deal. I will bolt on the old ones once they are powdercoated, (thoughts on this vs. welding?).

One surprise was that the steering dampener mount is the same for RHD and LHD? just an extra bit of linkage? Anybody know the story behind that one?

There is certainly some light surface rust, but for around $1500.00 with freight, I think it was worth it.

That new frame looks in superb condition Dan.

I'd be happy with bolted-on engine mounts. There's no great strain/stress on those rivets/bolts (remembering that the engine-side is bolted onto the block casting anyway.)

That shimmy damper should be riveted to the LH-side for a RH-drive vehicle and RH-side for a LH-drive vehicle because the idler is on the right for RH-drive and on the left for LH-drive. (And the other end of the damper goes to there.) So if you already have the damper bracket on the RH-side, you must have bought a chassis from a LH-drive vehicle. ........... Or perhaps I'm missing something.



PS. But ... wait a minute ... that pic you've posted showing the shimmy damper braket (on the right of your front crossmember) is your OLD rusty frame isn't it Dan?

Let me tell you, being a guy who has fought frame rot, you made a smart choice. I "fixed" my 40 frame 3 times before I finally put a beautiful, montana frame under it (no salt on roads). It will bring you peace of mind.

I had a title though so it was a lot easier legally.

Tom, very good eye. That was my old frame. the pictures were taken within a few minutes of each other, and i grabbed the wrong picture. I only spent a few scant minutes with the new frame today, so I will verify and take some new and better pictures.

I believe that if you are correct and the mount is opposite, I will just have them cut it off and powder coat the bracket and bolt it to the other side. I leave town for a 3 week business trip, and have no time to be pulling parts off between now and Thursday.

By the way, that new frame looks nice and clean. This will be an awesome rig when you are done!

Tom, you were right..I was wrong. The dampener is on the other side..funny how the mind works.. I would have bet $100.00 dollars. Met with the welder this morning, and he is on top of what I need. I am pulling all the rear frame parts that are riveted, and powdercoateng them separately, then bolting it all back together with SS grade 8 bolts.

The only hitch in the whole giddyup is that SOR didn't send the rear gussets for the spring mounts, only some cut out spring mounts..It would sting less if they had just told me..minor frustrating set back..just another $200.00 and some more time.

So I have been out of town for well over a month and yes LC Freak..there has been modest progress. You are welcome on the VR..glad to help out, and it was awesome visiting you and Sandec while I was in Portland/Vancouver. I got back last week, and commenced to finish tearing down the old frame and removing all the axle bits for re-assembly this weekend I hope.

Tearing apart the front axle was indeed one of the dirtiest jobs I have ever undertaken. The parts are at the powdercoaters today and hopefully finished by Friday. I am supposed to go to Mel's Saturday to reassemble them..we will see how that pans out.

The most exciting part was picking up the new frame, and unloading the new 5 speed from the trailer..still tons and tons of work to do, but the tear down is complete, and the reassembly begins in earnest as the schedule allows over the next few months. More to come. The garage is a mess to make room for the frame, but it will be tidied up in the next set of pictures.

Tom and Dallas...just for you, i wanted to show where the old VIN was placed in the new frame..top notch work IMO.

Harold did a great job. I will now have to wrestle with some issues..adding on the motor mounts to a RHD FJ frame for the 3b and whether or not to shift everything forward a few inches...still not sure how I am going to attach the right side motor bracket..there is a plate behind the old one, and there would be no way to attach a new one...I'm considering using bushings and going all the way through the frame.

Any suggestions from anyone else would be helpful. I am going to start a new thread.

Axle rebuild day!

So my pal Mel Lowe helped me rebuild the front and rear axles,..tons of fun. We didn't quite make the glory..ran out of time. Went really well! Thanks dude!

Frame is together!

So all the pieces went back together on the rear of the frame. All grade 8 Metric bolts to hold it together. should start adding the suspension this week.

It's a new cross member, but everything else is the new frame. Those gold bolts really pop..virtually every bolt on this will be new..there is a Fastenall right around the corner.
