Our board is occasionally graced with odd projects to share with the community...

Yakima Racks US does not have a great solution for GX trucks today - but Yakima Australia does....

If you visit that web site you'll see a model specific, hard mount kit with good weight capacity from three sets of mounting points. Use their vehicle finder for Toyota / Land Cruiser / Prado 3 bar 5 door

So I bought two products from Roof Racks Galore (an online dealer from the Yakima.com.au dealer locator)

Yakima Lock n load Roof Rack Leg Pack Of 6 8000144
Yakima Lock n Load Fitting Kit for 3 Bar Toyota Prado 150, LC200 8000311

Inclusive of freight (ouch) and GST it totalled to : AUD$365.15 (or about USD$270)

HD Bars or Lock N Load basket can be purchased here in the the US.

Install steps:

1 - remove flush rails

2 - open, follow instructions for the Prado fitting kit - 2 screws in each of six mount locations. Note each pad has a specific location.

3 - attach the leg packs (unlock to mount)
4 - attach support system for bars or lock n load platform

End result can be something like this (I like it and pretty close to roof):

Jake McCurdy is running similar system with Aussie towers.

Yep. Rick helped me get the Poor Man’s Land Cruiser suited with a proper rack. I’m loving the locknload, though I wish the mounts were metal, I’m pretty confident in them after hauling a couple hundred pounds down some pretty gnarly trails.

I also purchased the optional antlers kit:

Is this mount makes the rack quick release? Is the rack easily removed and leave just the bracket?

Yes. 6 key turns and you can lift the whole thing off (at least with mine, Rick can verify with the new version of the mounts). Weighs about 75lbs. My wife and I did that earlier in the summer so I could wax the roof. Kind of a pain to get it back without taking the platform brackets off. Id say 2 minutes to remove, 20-30 to reattach.

What happened to your old racks? Or have you been trading up for bigger and better?
