the small one would make one hell of a back-up light!

That was my first thought as well.

Would really want to see one in person at night before dropping that kind of coin. But never the less they look pretty freakin awesome.

LED's, while extremely bright, even painful to look at still do not provide illumination that carries very far. I have seen these lights before on race trucks and they are designed to provide a very thorough coverage pattern for the area right in front of the vehicle.
We are now starting to experiment with some LED "modules" that contain 4 and 6 LED's that are in excess of 1000 lumens. Some day I will see how they would work as a replacement dome light.

That´s what I though, they should made a superb auxiliary driving lamp to complement the low beam headlamp on foul weather or just when off-roading but using them as a long distance high beam, then I am not sold yet.

you can't use them as a driving light, they are far brighter than high beams. maybe some of you don't understand how bright they are.
i'll try to take some night pics later

Sweet lights! Now you've just added something else to my list of mods. Jerk!:D

X3

I've been trying to figure out the back up lighting issue for a while. I'd like to add brake and turn signal lighting in a custom bumper. These are readily available in LEDs for the trailer market (low profile and durable, so easy to fit in a bumper). I've been stuck on the back up lighting, but this looks super workable (albeit super pricey).

I was at the airport the other day walking through the parking garage and a new Caddy CTS was backing out of a spot. The back up's were so bright I saw spots... 1st thought was HID back up's, but now that I see they can get this bright, I'm thinking it was LED.

Nice job James.

I just picked up some LED 'fog lights' that will become my back up lights. Cheap off of e-bay from China. I got the 7 LED version, but they had a 16 LED version for under $30. (shipped)

these type of LEDs are quite expensive from what ive seen

Does anyone know what kind of LEDs they are using for this? Also I think they would be great if you had them pointing down from a roof rack during a camping trip.

I think I read somewhere that they're Luxeon 3W emitters and they've got individual reflectors for each LED. Not cheap, but not as expensive as CREE emitters from what I've heard.

Charleston posted a link above with some pretty amazing comparison shots at night....

Wow, one of those on a roof rack pointing in each direction would light up a trail at night like nobody's business. I'd be curious to see if they would be any good mounted up under the body to act as rocklights. Seems like they might not be diffuse enough though.

$300 for one of these isn't that horrible when you consider the longevity and durability of them compared to expensive conventional lights.

I tried it out tonite and I have mixed feelings about it. it's got great spread but I don't think it has the throw of my LF170s so that's disappointing. However, I think i have it aimed down too much so I have to realign it and try again- I'll keep you updated.

From pics online it seems to have at least the throw of driving lights

It seems like it's most basic function though is huge amounts of ambient light. I wonder if it could be useful with some tinting for a foglight :hhmm:

To get an idea of the intensity of these things, just look directly into your favorite LED flashlight or LED head lamp :crybaby::doh:

That new BIG Lexus has 6 LED headlamps... It's all in the reflector I suppose.

Well, all LEDs are not created equal either.

The LEDs in your keyboard cannot ever throw out anywhere close to this amount of light, no matter how much power you throw at them. These LEDs are specially designed and require aggressive cooling to keep them from fading and destroying themselves. They still last a lot longer than a conventional bulb, and draw alot less power.

This is true. I work with cutting edge LED's everyday and they have a more difficult time keeping the reliability due to the greater amounts of heat they create. Sure the LED element is supposed to last thousands of hours, but the heatsinking technology is always a little behind. I see alot of failures with the latest and greatest as it comes out. Through time everything is worked out but as the technology is advancing so rapidly, you will almost always be testing the beta unit.

These lights are awesome but as I said before, they are not made to take the place of HID's (as the pics posted may elude to). If I had the desire to put any aux lighting on my rig, these would be one of my first choices.

I get it, but one thing is bright and another thing is proyecting this bright lights to cover the same distance as the high beams which are a spot light.

What I was thinking is using them as auxiliary lights together with the low beams but only when off-roading because they could blind the oncoming drivers when driving on road.

that is my intended use. i'll see how it goes.
I like the low profile and low power draw. I played with it a bit tonite and aimed the hotspot so I have it centered now, I gotta run some night trails to test 'er out!

So how did that night run go? Got any pics to post up?
