I'm getting ready to replace a couple of gear sets and might be buying a special puller just for pinion and carrier bearings. Dunno if y'all will need it, but if so, that might be enough for me to bite the bullet and get it on the way so we can both utilize it.

Also, I'm in the same boat with not really needing a whole setup kit. Anyone have extra carrier shims that'll work for a 8" V6 diff and/or solid pinion spacer shims?

I have very little idea what I'm taking out and putting in on my 80 Steve, but you and Bomar might have an idea. My plan was to take the old stuff out and put it in a bag for potential reinstall later, BUT... if it'd help you out, you can use what you need and then I can figure out what needs I have if and when that time comes.

Thanks buddy. I'm probably going to have to consult with some old timers or somebody that's even more into Yota's than I am to ask if any of the parts you're gonna have will be usable for me. I'm kinda doubting it now though cause an 80 rear is a 9.25" or 9.5" ring and mine is an 8" so the carriers and thus bearing (and shim) diameters probably are different too.

Just thought of this too: If you're doing a lunchbox locker, you're probably not even going to be dealing with shims and bearings at all anyway. Just swapping all the spider gears with new parts.

Guess that's true too. Agian, showing my ignernce.

Okay gents, I have one spartan locker in hand, along with a 54mm socket and a birf kit. It's about to get real up in here....

Bomar, call me when you get a minute and let me know which weekend(s) work best for you. I will accomodate your schedule.

I picked a bad week to get off methamphetamines... Bomar.

Ironically, my dad just texted me today to set up a family thing at lunch on the 13th, so I guess it comes down to what time that morning you could do it? If it needs to be at or just after 12, we can do it in May, or if I get bored and crazy I can try it at home. Already been spraying the PB Blaster.

If earlier in the morning works, I can do that on the 13th. You call it, and thanks for helping me out.

I was thinking 1st thing in am...like 8am. It shouldn't take long since a full float rear. I would hope to have you back on road by 9:30 or 10:00...

On the front end rebuilds... I will also need to tear into my front end on the 62 to change out the front diff to 4.88s.

Let me get the hundo here and then plan some time in May to break down front axles before it gets too hot.

Ok, then if we're doing it early am, the 13th at 8am works. Let me know the location to show up and I'll be there with bells on. Thanks again.

Dang, full float and only a lunch box locker... Bomar is right, that won't take any time. Take longer to drain , refill and clean off the old gasket than to do the wrenching parts. haha

Side note from experience: If you can afford the extra time, do the diff sealant properly and follow the RTV directions. Which is to run the bead, assemble everything hand tight, let set up for a few hours, THEN torque to desired range. While tightening everything immediately works, the seal you get doing it the right way is far superior; especially if you ever have diff bolts/studs that work loose.

Steve you bring up a valid point. Is there a way to be letting that seal set (without reassembly) while we install the lunchbox, then reassemble? Or is it too much hassle?

Also, while I'm thinking about it, what fluids, weight, and how much do I need to bring to the party? Seals, sealant, etc?

You need a paper diff gasket. You don't even have to use sealant on those, I don't believe.

Do full float rears have an inner axle seal? If so, one of those.

Any (probably paper) hub gaskets.

New wheel bearings "while you're in there"?

3-4 quarts 90 wt gear oil.

New rear brake pads/calipers?

Well a simple locker install just got crazy....if all that happens we will be pushing..noon.

I was planning on unbolting the outer flange pull out the axle a couple of inches. Unbolt 3rd and pull out install locker. Clean housing on diff and axle. Thin coat of RTV let it sit for a few mins and tack up bolt back together....

Let me know the new action plan.

I'm good with that plan, Bomar. I assume we will have to drain/refill too, correct?

Sounds like we have a plan.

Working on the 13th so I'm out

I'm going to try to make it.

Where is this wrenching going down?

Can I drink beer and eat snacks while I watch y'all work?
