I should be able to make it. Cameron is right we can use a paper gasket, unless you just want to use rev which fine too.

Should have the OEM gasket in by then, ordered it Friday. Let's get ready to rummmble......

Nice to meet some of the memphis mud folks.

How did it turn out? Did you change anything before the second install?

Great meeting you and Mark too! We ended up pulling the whole locker out and reinstalling it. This time Bomar held his mouth just right, and it went back together easier. Also, coulda been that we'd already sheared off enough metal the first time, haha.

Second test drive wasn't nearly as horrifying, and I've since been reading that the Heep folks and others have all had similar scares regarding some of the noises the Spartans produce. On the way home, I could definitely tell the thing was back there, onramps and so forth where acceleration in a curve is required would elicit a pop every 200 yards or so. I'm still hoping that I'm not tearing the rear outta baby....

I really appreciate the amount of time you guys spent today helping me get this thing in. Not so sure I'd have done it if I knew then what I do now, but it's in and I intend to try to go through with a "break in" period. Hoping it doesn't turn into a "breaking" period.

Again, thanks very much!!

I'm noticing that it works fine when I turn right. Turning left yields the harsh sounds. Not coincidentally that's the side that appeared to be getting ground. Grinding, awful noises.

Great meeting everyone too. Keep us posted on the break in period hope it goes well.

Well boys, the break in period scarred up my carrier enough that I'm gonna have to either replace the carrier or replace the entire rear diff. Since I know bupkis about this, can someone tell me how involved swapping out the carrier is? I sse in the FSM a lot of measuring and guaging of parts/fitment, is it that involved to do? Anyone know costs, etc?

Get a whole new diff. My rear would need to be rebuilt due to bearings. The front diff Cam claimed a month ago.

My FJ40 lives! Finally got the parts today, installed the Trollhole carb, installed the air cleaner, crossed my fingers and it fired right up! I was hoping to get it running this weekend sometime, but had a few hours to tinker today and am happy I got it running again. Tomorrow I'll take it out and make sure I work the air out of the coolant lines (I'm pretty sure I can cram another gallon or so in there).

So excited to have it running again after about a year of neglect!

Great news Brad, hopefully I can get mine running soon.

I found a diff for sale for $190 shipping included. Thinking I'm gonna go that direction.

So a hypothetical question: would a guy be an idiot for screwing up one diff with a Spartan locker, then having to buy a used diff, then going out and buying an Aussie locker to stick in the new diff? Would y'all tend to run away from reinstalling that same locker in another diff (to see if it fits better)?

Bomar, how's your trip?

Any idea what went wrong with the spartan install?

I would not re-install it, as it is unlikely that there was something wrong with the diff. They are made to very tight tolerances and a problem would been evident pre-install.

Have you tried contacting Spartan?

Where is the $190 diff from? Cruiserparts? My experience has been that you still might have to have it rebuilt (new bearings) to get it up to DD duty.

If you know the diff is good, I don't see a problem putting in an Aussie.

However, if it were me, I'd want to run it open first to make sure it doesn't need to be rebuilt.

I had to go through several from Cruiserparts to get one that was satisfactory.

Aw crap man, this is the 3rd time I've pulled this rear, and I'm not wanting to hear that I might be back in there a few more trips!

It is definitely messed up. Severely etched/rubbed on sides. When I talk about putting an Aussie back in, I meant into the new diff that's inbound.

I tried calling Spartan, no contact info. Made by Randy's ring and pinion, but calling their number gives you voicemail options. Left 3 messages, nobody will call me back. Not looking promising.

Got the diff from cruiseryard.net, dealt with Jason. Hoping its a one and done.

I would wait on the response from spartan before buying an aussie.

I have used cruiseyard before and it quirked out well.

So when are you planning to take it all or again

Let me get with a jeep buddy, he put a Spartan in his TJ, maybe those guys have a number for Spartan

I already took the third back out. Right now LC is gathering dust in my driveway waiting for the new third to come in.

Mike if you can get a direct number that would be great.
