The transmission is in....but I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. The turned flywheel went on easily, the clutch assembly, thanks to the installation tool was a breeze. The bellhousing a bit more difficult given the awkward location of the bolts. But what a f-ing nightmare getting that tranny back in. The stand never failed me really, in so far as I wasn't killed by a falling drivetrain, but it took me about 3 hours of proping, prying, pushing, pulling, turning, swearing...before it finally lined up and slid in. I slowly got the four bolts started and knew I was lined up right, then turned the t-case output shaft a little bit and in she went....I ratcheted like I've never ratcheted before...praying that I'd get those bolts tight before I woke up from the dream.

Now I still have a question, how do you know what the proper pre-load is on the t-case output nut? I swapped out the seal and need to know how tight.

Also, does anyone have an exploded diagram of the t-case output flange? I can't remember if the spacer ring went on the inside or outside of the speedo worm gear..s***...for that matter, which way does the drive gear go on or does it matter?.

Also, a comment on Napa Auto Parts Duncan...run...do not walk...away from these clowns...5 parts ordered, 3 were wrong and 1 never showed up at all. I'm now waiting until Tuesday to get a slave cylinder.

I still remember the frustration of trying to install my first transmission 35 years ago. It does get easier with practice - eventually.
 
the spacer goes on the inside.
with the adapter i made i can do a clutch in about 4 hours... for years though it was a floor jack and a lot of frustration...
congrates on a finished job
 
yeah, that napa in duncan is kinda useless. the lordco in town isnt much better either.

have you tried Duncan Auto parts? kindof in the back of duncan there , right next to island hose and hydraulic.

it's a great little place, often will actually know what you mean when you say bj70.

so far they've done great for cruiser parts, and better prices than lordco or napa.

I guessed wrong...easy enough to reverse however (I havn't bent down the ears on the locknut yet. I'll pick up and in/lb wrench tomorrow. My speedo assemply doesnt look like that one that though, there's a spiral gear that goes in before the flange, and engages a number of small plastic gears deeper inside the case. Does it matter what orientation that spiral gear has?

I've been to Duncan Auto Parts for the odd thing, but I'll have to use them more often.
 
I know your pain. I have done 3 now. The smart thing I started to do was to use a 4x4 across the doors with the windows open and a small come-along. Far superior to a floor jack and adapter. Glad to here you got it in.

REALLY? care for a friendly competition? you do a clutch job in your garage your way and i will in mine my way. looser buys supper...and i will guarantee no damage to door sills...
 
Congratulations. If you were in the boy scouts you would get a gearbox patch in front of the troop:D

Hmmm, a clutch swap competition. Sure. You provide the trucks and well go at it :). I must concede that I have used the come along trick on a bj42 with the h55f and wish I could have on a eep that used to own. On the 42, I did not damage the doors and I presumed that the doors on the 70 series are somewhat stronger that those on the 42. With proper protection, I am somewhat sure that the doors would not get damaged, but also acknowledge that your exeperience outweighs mine by several orders of magnitude and in that regard I am sure that if the competion came down to who did it fastest and with fewer personal physical damage you would kick my ass from here to Zamma Lake. This does not however constitute an invite for a free supper, though I am sure we would have a blast no matter who paid :).

ah, forget the competition, lets just do lunch...
the challenge might be a bit "fixed" since my garage is setup for this stuff. i have the pit, plates for the rollers and a sweet adapter which makes the whole process a one man EASY job. (man, i can come across as an ass sometimes)

I've really worked them over well in the past few years. At first, it was hard.... but my persistence has paid off and now they know cruisers fairly well. Same went for Gorge Auto in Victoria, though I haven't been there all that much since I moved.
