One of the windshild wiper motors on my 67' fj40 runs really slow. Can I rebuild it or change the brushes or something? I know that when one of my skil saws slows down changing brushes maks it run like new. Thanks Albee

I don't know about '67 motors specifically, but I recently installed new brushes in the motor for my '76.

The Graphite Store has a large selection of tool brushes. You'll have to improvise. Find brushes that are close to the correct brushbox size and sand them to fit. Most tool brushes come with a spring and cap on the end of the pigtail. Just cut the cap off, remove the spring, and solder the pigtail to the connections for the wiper motor. Makes the motor operate like new.

Good luck with it.

honestly i bet a local alternator shop could help you out with that one

Albee, whatever you do, could you post the result? I have exactly the same problem on my '67 FJ45. Lucky it's the passenger side, but my local state vehicle inspection station got real whammy about it.

And Spotcruiser, thanks for the lead. I'd rather do it myself; kinda like souping up slot cars as a kid!

Most of the old motors that I have had apart were just bound up. 40 year old grease combined with a little moisture makes them turn slow, some cleaning, polishing of the shafts and bushings, new grease, they run like new.

Todd, since my '75 use the same motor as a '76, do you happen to have the part number? I took mine apart last time and found out that I have about 1cm lef of the brushes. I cleaned it up and it works well but will need new brushes soon. Thanks very much.

Here you go Tien. This is from a couple of previous posts.

You can order tool brushes here: http://www.graphitestore.com/ p/n 10-181811 (Carbon Brush 0.187" x 0.187" x 0.625", H3). You'll need three of them [high speed brush (+), low speed brush (+), and the (-) brush that is common to both speeds]. Cut the copper plates off of the new brush pigtails, sand them down on one side to fit the brush holders of the wiper motor, and solder them in. You may even need to sand them down a little in length to get them into position. Radius them to the commutator as best you can. Be careful and take your time. The motor will function like new after replacement of the brushes.

One thing I should add: When you cut the copper plate off of the new brush pigtails, cut as close to the copper plate as you can. You need all of that wire length to make the connections and allow the brushes to advance properly in the brushholder.

When I bought brushes last, you could order them individually. Now they're making you buy 12 brushes. I'm sure you can find some other folks down that way, that also need new wiper brushes, to share the extra brushes with.

HTH,
Todd.

I worked on mine this weekend. The brushes were okay but the adjustment screw at the far end of the motor shaft needed to be adjusted in. After I did that, the wipers operated smoothly and kept running after I turned them off to the bottom of the windshield (instead of stopping in the middle of the windshield).

Thread revival!

Thanks for the info! I'll be tearing mine apart this weekend, as it quit working at the extreme left of the windshield (from inside). Rainy weekend, but slow speeds and RainX helped a lot.

Mine were working, but stopped all together. Maybe I'll try tearing into them and lube 'em up a little. I don't know what else it could be.....there is power to the circuit.....

Why not check with Dan for a new one? I rebuilt the one on my 71, it was no big deal, just lubed the bearings, cleaned the gunk out of the motor housing and installed new brushes. The return switch needed to be sanded a little.

Id check on how much a new one would be, or maybe look for one in a parted out vehicle someplace dry like Nevada or Arizona. Im sure they have had less use than any other motors.

But they want to sell you a bag of 12 of them for $55 plus shipping:rolleyes:

This place has 'em for $6.50 each.

Yep, the Graphite Store used to sell them individually for about $3, but now sell them by the dozen. :frown:

I rebuilt the motor in my '75 with some good info from spotcruiser; I took pictures of the process 'n everything (I can post those up here if it'll help).

Here's the info on the brushes I got. Can't remember how many were in the package, but it was more than I needed (don't remember the price). Had to shave them down some, but that was the easiest part of the whole process! The '67 motor may or may not be the same. I'll try to find the remaining brushes in the shop tomorrow if'n I get a chance...

Here's a new brush (part # above) compared to a worn out OEM from my '75...a little bit of tinkering with 'em and they worked like a charm. Thanks again, spotcruiser!

I saw 67,
My bad:doh:. Started there and got out of sync. You are correct and we are back on track.

Old thread I know. Thought it might help some people out that are going to replace their brushes on their wiper motor. I've just ordered from here: Tamped with Spring Carbon Brushes on Helwig Carbon Products, Inc.

You can still order them by the piece here. Shipping was a bit much at $12.99 but I don't need 12 of them. Hope it helps.
