Did a search here and did not find anything. I have a new windshield seal that I want to install (or have installed) and am wondering is anyone here has experience doing this? I watched a couple YT videos and the poster talked about not being able to get the seal to seat properly on the bottom near where the dashboard terminates. Evidently, there is an additional pieced of metal that prevents the seal from being rope pulled over on the inside. They had to drill out the spot welds and remove this piece along the bottom edge of the windshield opening.

I do not want to have to do that, but am wondering if the replacement seal design doesn't allow for this additional metal piece. Has anyone run into this? Please tell me there is a way around removing the metal. I have a 1981 that desperately needs a new seal. I have not removed the old seal yet, so don't know if my truck has this piece of metal or not. Any advice is appreciated.

Bump to the top for any experience with this. Yes, I do realize that you should start from the bottom, but my question relates to that area. To recap, I have watched a couple videos on YT to get educated on the process and both complained of an extra piece of sheet metal at the base of the windshield opening. This prevented the seal from seating properly on the bottom interior by the dash. Both guys had to remove that extra piece to give the seal room to seat. I runs parallel to the bottom of the opening from the left A pillar to the right A pillar.

Has anyone with my Gen truck (81) replaced the windshield and run into this? I am hoping not or that an experienced windshield installer will be able to deal with it easily. Both the YTers were DIY installers and I do not plan to do that. Thanks for any help you can give.

Not a Gen1 pickup, but ... I have a FJ40. I needed to replace the windshield. I tried, and tried, but couldn't do it. I needed a new windshield in my Venza. While at the glass shop I asked them if they could also do the FJ40 windshield. I had the frame and glass in the Venza. "Sure" they said. While I was on the phone with the insurance company arguing with them about the Venza glass, they installed the FJ40 glass. Best $100 I've spent in a long time.
