What are you running for an OS now?
If it's win 8 it's a no brainier to go to 10, big improvement.
If you are on win 7 it's kind of a toss up

I went from 7 to 10 and I'm fine with it so far, been running it since it went live. I mostly use that PC for gaming and media consumption so I could easily wipe and go back to 7 any time I choose. My other PC's are all still on 7.

If you use it for business might be best to stick with 7 until the free offer is about to expire. For consumption/entertainment 10 is fine.

Agree, 7 and 10 work great. 8 blows.

Honestly if you think they haven't already patched in that sort of access into older versions of Windows quite some time ago you are naive.

If that sort of thing bothers you your only real option is a stripped down base Linux but even that can be compromised if there was a need.

I put 10 on 2 of my machines, my every day work laptop and my desktop/media server/misc machine. As for the laptop it's fine, operationally it's very similar the main thing is the "start" button, left-click and it's the new easy way to do things, right-click and it's more of a nut-n-bolts interface. Visually it's prettier and there are more things that happen when you copy files, for instance. Instead of a plain boring progress bar you get more info. Completely unnecessary, but there you go.

If you get into the workings of Windows often, you'll find the new "why use 2 clicks to get to the Properties screen when 7 clicks will do" somewhat frustrating. Programs are now called "Apps".

All my old software came over just fine, especially Office 2010 and Chrome. Cortana, the new web browser, I'm not a fan. Internet Explorer 11 does still exist but you have to start it manually. As for the desktop/media machine, I use it to burn flash drives for work, access my movies and music, and sync my iPods. It's the iPod thing that is the big deal, both my iPods won't talk to iTunes on this machine any more.

I have 2 printers, plus several loaded printer drivers for different clients offices when I'm there. All these different drivers also came over fine.

Windows 10 boots WAY faster than 7. Even from a complete shutdown. Sleep mode works better. I can't speak to multiple displays as I only run one monitor at home and haven't done any multi-monitor setups in 10 yet.

I left 7 on my wife's PC and my Toughbook just because.

As far as spying by the hardworking patriotic nice people at the NSA and other places, your OS is the least of your concerns.

I moved to 10 in all 3 of my computers and I like it a lot.

 Please post up what you decide and if you like it. Might follow your lead.

yes, upgrade. source: millennial with a ton of computer knowledge.

Windows 10 seems good and stable, but Microsoft does a good job watching/using your usage within the OS (phone numbers, GPS location, credit card numbers, messages, browsing, etc.) in order to cater better to you. Some of this can be disabled, but even still, some people are turned off by all that. If is the case for you, windows 7 would be my recommendation. I recently re-purposed an old machine with 7, and to be honest it was a breath of fresh air...

Running over to the Linux world would make a fast and secure machine for what you are needing. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are quite user friendly.

If that is all you need don't bother with a pc at all - your tablet can already do all that.

I went with 7, easy to dive into from XP. I like it.

From what I was told, 10 requires a learning curve to get familiar with, if you have time....

Ya I think for my next upgrade I am buying a Mac. The user interface has not changed significantly in 15 years. There is something really nice about not having to relearn how to use your computer every other year.

Gibson Research, GRC Never10 will turn off the involuntary auto update that MS has in store for you. If you like 7 for its efficiency and minimal data mining (compared to 10), you can use the GRC tool to remove cached 5GB (yes, GIGS) of preinstall files that your machine has already downloaded and stored in prep for the forced upgrade.

Source: a GenX with mild paranoia about gov.org and google/MS spying.

Most machines that came with 7 were an older era, and the upgrade to 10 may tax your hardware with all the background processes it will be running. Newer or upgraded hardware won't feel this, but if you upgrade and it bogs dowm, a solid state harddrive may be in your future...

Win8 upgrade? No question, it's a turd of an OS.
