Believe me, I searched. Hoping to get some input on winches. I'll give you the background, hopefully you can point me in the right direction.

The truck is an 85 60, OME lift, 33 BFG's on it. MAF 4+ front winch bumper, SROR dual swing-out rear bumper. I'd estimate around 5,000 lbs (4,300 curb plus extras). I don't really load it up for long expeditions, no tent, fridge, or large amounts of cargo, so I wouldn't estimate it would fluctuate much above that. I can get a more exact weight if it would help you guys zero in on the right winch.

As far as use, this would be mostly for emergencies, helping myself or others out of trouble. I don't plan on doing crawling competitions, or mudding to any real degree, so it's not going to be seeing heavy use.

So my question is as follows: Winch depot has the Warn M8000 on sale for $750. That seems like a pretty good deal. Do I need to go higher?

Also, I know it's a tired debate, but are there any newer thoughts on brands? I know Warn is usually the hands-down favorite, but I'm interested in hearing other opinions (aka can I save some cash and go with something else or is it a no-go?)

Thanks

Edit: goofed on the curb weight.

I've always assumed the rule of thumb was 1.5 times the GVW.

I agree with the rule of thumb and...

I'm with the previous post - the golden rule of 1.5x the vehicle weight. the M8000 should just do the trick. You can also get a snatch block to do a double line pull to increase the capabilities of that winch.

check around on the web for a better price on the M8000. I got my for like $500 - new. I think 4x4connection has them on sale right now. You should also check out Rocky Mountain Cruisers, I think they have them on sale. I got mine at 4 wheel parts...

I do pulls like this pretty often with my warn 9000. the snow can be like cement.

I've gotten lazy before and let it pull through deeper stuff.

I wouldn't want to have any less than the 9000 honestly.

Hi All:

X2 what "Cardinal" wrote. The Warm M8000 should be fine, especially if you use a snatch block to double the pull.

You might also consider Superwinch brand winches, like the X9 for $714.00 This what I have on my FJ40.

Good luck!

I just hate having to use a snatch block. who knows how much the extra 1000lbs helps really.

Wow

WD sure jacked up the prices on these things

When I was looking at the M8K's last year, they had them for $512 w/free shipping and I was waiting for them to drop back to under $500 cause that's what folks were paying months before

I ended up going with a SuperWinch EP9.0 instead

It was like $60 bucks more than the M8k (at the time), but comes with a heavy duty 20k snatch block (orth $100 bucks alone), has a much better clutch lever design and a submersible Albright noid box

It's also comparable to the much more expensive Warn 9.5XP (which it went up against in MoabJeeper's "winches in hell" article :)
