Researching buying a winch for my 40, Thinking warn 8000.
What is the difference between the hawse and roller fairlead?

Warn 8274-50.

Every 40 should have one.

Mine included.

One has rollers to lessen friction, one does not. Ideally Hawse is used with synthetic rope, roller with wire cable.

harbor freight sells winches i think for like 50 bucks. looks like you could take them off some pretty sweet jumps too!!
i might get one for my back bumper just to look cool ehehe.
i cant remember what the rating was...but it looked "heavy duty"...and i think for the warrantee you prolly just have to send it back to china maybe.

i have the warn 9000 on mine. it can actually lift itself up in the air if the tree is strong enough!!

I second the opinion about the 8274-50. Great winch! It's made with spur gears rather than the planetary gears in use by other winches. I'm not dissin' planetary gears, they are fine too but a good Warn 8274-50 is something to behold.

The only winch that you will ever need for your 40, and, the only winch you will ever purchase for it.

1150.00us shipped to your door.

Break that down over 20 years, is 57.50 a year.

You will not spend a better 60.00us a year on your truck, period. ;)

Good luck!

Another good winch is the Superwinch Husky. Like the 8274, it is expensive... built for everyday use... real tools. If you need an occasional extraction, most planetary winches will suit you just fine for a long time.

The 8274-50 just look's right on a Cruiser.

Based on the number I still see in service they hold up well.
