How much should the original winch for the fj40 cost in good condition with all the hardware (the PTO) ....... Thanks in advance

Seen them go for >$2000

Rarely see a complete PTO winch come for sale. Usually some of the smaller hard to find pieces are missing.

Just talking the years mid 63-78 winches imported to the US things to look for are the hook and chain at the end of the cable. Complete shifter for the PTO including the the year correct knob and lock for the transmission hump. Upper and lower wedges where the back angle iron bolts to the frame by the bib. Pillow block bearing and short shaft. A unmolested U joint where the shear pin goes at the winch. The PTO, winch and long driveshaft are easier to find.

Only PTO available, serviced with all bearings/seals changed ready to fit. Inbox if intrested.

What about this

Hugh difference buying a OEM winch for $500 than a aftermarket winch for $3,100. Remember a friend of mine had a Warn winch he sold to another friend of mine. The guy selling took if off a FJ40. The guy who bought it put it on his CJ5. Something along the lines of a soft top designed for a Jeep made to fit a FJ40. Just not my cup of tea. Prefer OEM parts that are unique to the Land Cruiser and not something that the main market was the Jeep first.

I believe the issue has always been between electric and motor driven. The PTO is useless without a running engine. I am the second owner of a 1969 and the original owner had the dealer install an electric winch.

I'm sure the same winch as was offered for a Jeep. Not debating if was a dealer add on. So was a Ramsey PTO winch along with a bunch of other aftermarkets options. Thirty five years owning my first PTO winch never had a time my engine wasn't running. Anyone who uses a winch for work uses one that works directly off the engine not a battery and alternator. Not sure why when ever a thread is directed at a PTO winch someone has to start the PTO verses electric.:bang: plenty of threads already out there with that debate. This one was started solely about the TEQ PTO winch.:meh:

Please do not take this as a comparison of electric vs. PTO. I cannot prove numbers, but it seems that electric winches were more prevalent than PTO in this country. So, we are now in the classical phase of FJ40s and if someone wants all the parts for a PTO, they are digging real deep for them. The original post in this thread was about the cost of a PTO, not a comparison. Basically, if the price for a kit is >2200.00, that is quite a lot for used parts. (and that is assuming all the little parts are there).
This many years later, I am glad I have an electric winch, all original from 1969, and never had any issues with it and will work as long as I have a battery. I see the history and uniqueness of the PTO as well. As the first post asks, I believe the costs are higher for the PTO restoration then for an electrical restoration. That is what I believe.

I added the original PTO to my 40–still had the original rope and hook.I was missing a couple of pieces and met John (@Living in the Past) in AZ to trade a few pieces with him. For me, it was important to have it look like it was always there (and it does). Heck, I bought a crappy tranny hump with PTO hole so I had a perfect template for the tranny hump shift hole and safety flap hole cutout. All in around $2,400 but I was happy to have it.
