Hello, all. I was out yesterday performing some basic trail clean up with the new winch. While hauling a fridge up an embankment, my brand new winch motor stalled about 10 seconds into this easy pull.... very discouraging! I figured something shorted, and upon removal today, I found the problem. One of the terminals that feeds power to the brushes had poor contact where the brush wire screwed to it (inside the motor). The heat it created warped the contacting area, the resistance increased and it came to the point where the motor could not be suppled with enough power, causing it to stall.

So I cleaned things up, made sure good connections were had by all 4 brushes, then reassembled. The winch pulls great again, nice, smooth, and strong. Problem - it will no longer power out, which it did do prior to this stall. Flick the toggle either way on the remote, and it pulls in... wierd. My contactors (big solenoids) are working properly. I am at a loss... any one out there have some ideas? Another new winch motor?

Brian,

Are you absolutely sure that all four contactors are working? Maybe do a contunitiy or voltage check? it sounds like one of the control wire to the reversing contractors isn't making good contacts or perhpas it's melted? Just thinking out loud. Try swapping the two red wires (I assume they're red) on the motors and see if the motor will go in reverse even though you have the toggle in the "fwd" position.

If the the two red wires, F1 and F2 are reversed, it still pulls in both ways... I will try messing it more tomorrow... sometimes simple things can be overlooked. Thanks for the reply! :D

Bjowett. Sorry to hear about that dude. I know you put a lot of time and effort into it. If it's any consolation, I rebuilt my X9 and put it back in the other week. Used it one time and it's fried again. :(

Thanks, but at this point, I think I'll have more fun, taking it apart piece by piece and throwing the bits as far away as I can. :anger: :anger:

Will probably fix it again, just so dang frustrating. This time it was just the stupid selenoid, but it's just getting so old and has never been reliable.

Hmm, if you switched F1 and F2 and the motor is still running in the same direction then that tells me that your field isn't reversing. Dumb question but are the pair of contactors wired properly? No insult meant!

I have absolutely no experience with winches but I'd image some kind of lock out circuit that would only allow one side or the other to be activated at a time and has failed so it is in the out postion all the time.

Not much help I know but I thought it might give you something to look at.

When my solenoids were fried, they clicked, passed voltage, but the power in did not work. New solenoids did the trick. You also must have good connections to power & ground, and don't use the side terminals on a battery.
