Will the new 3.0l Duramax I-6 be a viable repower option?

I'm sure some of you have seen the announcement from Chevy that the new 2019 1500 will have an optional 3.0 liter inline 6 turbo diesel as an optional engine. This is an all new engine (versus an Isuzu rebadge, although likely developed by Isuzu) that will have around 250hp and 440lbs/ft of torque. I'm sure there will be a good bit of electronic wizardry at play but barring any swap effort show stoppers would this be a viable repower candidate for an 80?

Good question. I’ve been wondering the same. The second generation, as I understand, corrected a few initial problems and is now (so far) reliable, powerful, and very efficient.

No. Too much emissions BS. Take that out of the equation and there is still too much to go wrong. Or maybe I’m just a new diesel hater 🤷‍♀️

I have a customer with one (3.0) who is without a truck due to a coolant bypass valve failure. Zero availability from Gm, no ETA.

I read great things about that engine. Straight Six. Great power. Great efficiency.

But I also read that it has a belt driven oil pump. And you have to pull the tranny to change the belt. That would seem to be significant issue for those of us who like to keep things going for a long time.

This exactly

If someone wants a viable reliable diesel swap idea..

Look up Wagler Half Max.

This will be huge when they get to cast blocks and reasonable money. If I had a short block from them I could assemble the rest with left over parts I have laying around.

That is nuts, but they should add two more cylinders and call it a Wagler 3/4 Max.

How they did it is pretty awesome. It’s literally half of a 6.6 Dmax. Same cyl head, same injectors, same rods/ pistons, same water pump and CP3, same rear cover.

If they aren’t a million dollars I might own one eventually
