Hi Guys,

My 1988 BJ74 build plate says my axle code is K085. Reviewing the Birfield thread at

http://www.birfield.com/modules.php?name=TLCFAQ&p=/~ramullen/FAQ/TEXT/09-01.html

my axle is as follows:
Ring gear size: 9.5"
Ring/pinion gear ration: 4.111 (teeth - ring: 37; pinion: 9)
# of spider gears: 4 (applies to Limited Slip Diff)

So.... this code applies to the rear diff only.

How would I find out about the spec on my front diff? Anyone know what it is?

Thanks,

Bruce

Open diff
Ring gear size: 9.5"
Ring/pinion gear ration: 4.111 (teeth - ring: 37; pinion: 9)

Unless someone has monkey'd with it in Japan...

You gonna put the LSD in the front, and the Ozzie in the rear?

In the front you have the same diff .. in fact, you can change 3rd member from rear to front .. easy.

Are you saying that if you have a land cruiser that came with LSD it has them in front and rear? I thought they only put LSD in the rear.

Thanks,

Michael

Yes only on rear from factory, but you can move easy this LSD to the front diff and put a locker in rear .. :D

is the same 3rd member front and rear ..

as long as it is older than 1990 then yes, after 1990 then it depends on the front diff size...

that's right .. ;)

Bump! Am trying to decide about lockers on my '89 BJ74. Same axle code as the guy posted above, K085.

Is there anything special to know about running an Aussie locker in the rear? Seems like this is a pretty inexpensive way to go about it. Would be much cheaper and easier than an ARB. Plus sounds like I could move the rear OEM LSD to the front? Any issues on a street rig that sees some trail use?

Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Somehow, cheap and easy don't spring to mind when speaking of exotic (7X) Landcruisers :)

With all your hard work and expense on this rig, do you want to make a dollar decision that will likely be reversed down the line?

You know you want a matched set of selectables... air, cable, electric.......

The main reason for considering a cheaper option now is the upcoming trip through Oregon and then UT/Swell/Moab for my trip home. I'd like to have something back there, but having not driven the truck yet am undecided on the final "state of the build" so to speak.

Will I be happy with 33s, or want to run 35s? Or maybe a 34?
Will I want to regear the t-case? Will I want to regear the axles?

I'd like to do this first trip and get some seat time before making all the decisions above. If the OR/UT/Swell/Moab trip is done unlocked, my buddies who are coming with who are both 3x locked might get tired of using the snatch strap on me!

Wise man:
1 friends with recovery gear
2 new TC gears
3 two new selectable lockers
4 maybe higher ratio in diffs for those long drives from PA to UT :)

Or perhaps:
4: Enough credit card points from item #1-3 above to ship truck to UT and fly out to collect it :) Not a whole lot of interesting country b/w Philadelphia and Denver...

Any other thoughts or experience with driveability of a lockright/aussie equipped 70-series??

I had a lockright in back of my 62. It had a built-in failure alert (clunk, clunk, clunk) before it failed completely. :)

I have not driven in a 70 with one. I have, however, driven in both leaf sprung (spring under), and coil sprung heeps. From my experience, a flexy coil sprung short (95" and shorter wheelbase) rig with any auto locker can be a handful on the street ...

In comparison, a leaf sprung (spring under) rig is quite drive able. That said, I would be careful in snowy / icy road conditions as the on/off throttle behavior of the auto locker in turns could get interesting as the drive / brake force shifts from one side of the rear axle to the other ...

You just have to get an open centre for the rear diff and drop in the locker.

Now if you have a LSD diff in the rear of a LJ70 or RJ70 "8" diff which are 4 pinion they make this model locker.
