why is the end of my birf sticking out?

Phil doesn't have dust caps.

He's got Aisins.

Ahh.

Well then, pop the twist knob cover off and hop on the freeway for a couple miles.......:hillbilly:

Uh I drove home without the drive plate on after blowing my birf and didnt spread that much grease. If that was the norm would the cap be full of grease:idea: when removed every time?
I still stand by my guess:flipoff2: time will tell

There is a variable here. With the birf being able to move in and out it would tend to push grease up and out the end of the spindle. That may encourage the splatter.

I've seen a couple of these tall birf/short flange combos in person and they tend to throw grease for some reason.

Like when you run only hubs with unmodded long birf:hhmm:

The PO was made aware of this problem and decided not to go either direction with the Aisin hubs or the longer drive flanges. We did however fix a problem for you after you picked up the 80 we repaired a faulty inner hub seal. In the late hour we did this repair for you, we should have brought this to your attention. You will need to purchase the longer late model drive flanges to correct this problem. Call me a the shop and we will discuss. I am sorry that this is left for you to fix, but we will take care of it for you.

As always we will stand behind our work no matter what.

Cam and IPOR are great. They helped us out in November on our way back to TX and now they have helped out again.

Thanks a ton Cam and IPOR.

Cheers,

Short ABS birfs have been superceeded to the longer version by Toyota. It is a multiple substitution which requires repalcing the drive flange as well.

Fascinating. I wonder how many Toyota parts guys know about such a difference....probably not many. So does the Toyota parts database indicate these types of dependencies when a buyer inquires about a new birf, or is up the person(s) to know about the longer flange requirement?

The catalog shows multiple substitutions in the text but you need to be paying attention to what it is telling you.

Oooooo. I'll take this challenge to Jerry at Boulder Toyota and see if he passes. :)

The multiple sub will only show up for applications with a production date of 4-94 and prior.

Guys,

So, when I get the new longer flanges to fit the newer birfs, can I just remove the old short ones and install the new ones? FSM looks like it's straightforward since its on the very end of the axle. Is this part just R/R?

OR since the birf looks like it has moved out and pushed off the dustcap, do I have to take apart the axle to reseat it??

Dont want to get it off and realize that there is mucho trabajo.

Cheers,
Mike

Never worked on this type of axle before

Also can I drive it in the meantime? I haven't been, but want to know if I can or not.

Thx!
Mike

You can drive it until you get the right part, at least I did. It is a straight forward 5 minute job, although I did have some trouble with the dust cap it is a very snug fit and I still don't have it seated fully.

tyler,

Word. thx for the heads up.

Mike

I just ordered a new Birf for my 95 and I wonder if I'll run into this long/short drive flange issue.
Is this issue on earlier than 95 models? or what determines when the longer flange is needed?

4/1994 is the cut off between the two.

You will be fine.

I had to replace the drive flanges on mine when I replaced the birfs with new because they were longer than the older ones on my 93.

Phil has the fancy painted Aisins...

If the bushing was worn that badly it wouldn't be there.....:)

To add to that, also the ABS would have been false triggering and there might even have been sensor/ring wear.

regards

Dave

You can get the earlier shorter style ones and transfer your ABS rings to the new one.

:meh:

Thanks for the info Onur, also regarding the ABS ring, will that be on my new one or do I need to transfer it over?
