Why is my oil pressure is low?

It just recently got cold here in Montana, and I noticed that my oil pressure has gone down significantly even after warming up my 80. I have been using 10w-30 oil and had no problems prior to it being co

These oil pressure gauges are notorious for being wrong.

You should either have a shop check your oil pressure with a direct-mount gauge or do it yourself.

From a gauge standpoint, it does not LOOK to be out of line at idle. What is it at 3000 RPM?

Contrary to that, my needle is ALWAYS at the top of the gauge, so mine could also be wrong.

You need to do an ACTUAL and not just believe the gauge.

that looks fine from the pictures, that's about where mine is normally. the gauges are really more of a guess at the oil pressure rather than what it actually is.

pffftt ... that seems just fine, Mine can hover just above the bottom line when using 5w-30 and the AC isn't running on a warm day. Your gauge is where mine reads with the AC bumping the idle up.

I would be more interested in what its like at 2000 to 3000 rpms than at idle.

Maybe not calibrated numbers, but mine has always been at the third mark when cold and going down the road, second mark at warm idle. All of the ones we work on are as expected, every time, so repeatable. Have had a couple of wires break at the connector, but have only changed a sender as PM, never seen a failure. Don't give exact number, but gives consistent, repeatable indication of oil pressure.

Maybe we have less problems because we don't have road salt, rust, corrosion, issues?

As above the guages are often 'off', however the sender can be calibrated.

Steps are simple enough, they are in my long running thread (see link in sig).

Before you do anything take the above advice, have a master guage fitted to get a true reading.

If all good, then go ahead with the calibration.

Dave

Replace the sensor. $20 from autozone and a 2 min job. Mine failed because it was rusty. New sensor, no problem.

The sensor in the little round thingy with 2 connectors on it by the PS motor mount. It just screws in and out.

Correlation with outside temp doesn't mean thats the cause.

I foolishly tore my Gambler 500 car ('84 Tercel 4x4 wagon) apart to replace the oil pump due to low pressure. Didn't fix a thing. Replaced $8 sender.... pressure was fine.:bang:

I'd check the sending unit and confirm with a mechanical gauge.

Mine reads that the pressure is almost into the high range under heavy load, probably also needs to be replaced.
