Any thoughts? I look directly down the drivers side from front to back and the front tire sits out about 3 - 4" wider than rear. The same on the passengers side...just about 1". I know I need new leafs, shackles, bushings, etc but dang...that's a lot. 74 fj 40. Same rims & tires both front & back.

Knuckles good, bearings new & tight, etc.

Body is not square on the frame?

Frame is bent?

You need another beer? ;)

Okay dude...then why are both sides wide?...hense the reason for my post. Frame...yes, possible. Body has nothing to do with the axles.

How long have you owned this truck?

Have you ever done brakes or wheel bearings or any other front axle work on this truck?

Put a strait edge on both rotors after removing the front tires and come back with a measurement.

I have the same problem on my 60. It is due to some light frame damage from an accident by a previous owner. Next time I have the motor and tranny out I am going to take to a local frame shop and get it fixed. Its the kind of thing that no one else notices but it jumps out at me every time i look at it. Tires wear perfect and doesn't pull.

No sir...nothing done other than the new disc kit that I just put on ...along with knuckle guts, seals, etc. The leaf seams a bit twisted...so do the shackles...I'm going to change this stuff out, but just wondered if this was the norm for LC's

Poser - forgive my rookie ignorance, but what exactly do you want me to measure? Straight edge...? It's been a long day.

Wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface from side to side on the front axle.

I did a quick measure earlier today to check toe-in...front side, rim to rim was 49.5" and backside rim to rim was 50.5".. will this work?

If both front wheels are wider than the rear, could someone put a 60 or 80 front housing in?

is the backspacing on your front and rear rims the same? aftermarket rims are available in different backspacing on essentially the same rim. take off your rims, and measure from the hub mounting surface to the inside edge of the rim, maybe also check the width overall?

Are you by chance sighting across the outer face of the front tire, looking at/toward the back tire when you determine that the front is wider than the rear?

If so, it sounds like it is just the toe in deceiving you.

Mark...

My front wheels stick out further than my rears also. Turns out PO put different backspacing wheels on the front to allow for turning clearance.

The front axle width is wider than the rear. But it should be even and square side to side.
Most vehicles are this way.
Sounds like frame damage or bad susp. parts.

Gladly,
That is one beautiful cruiser, but one thing....I think your bezel is upside down :) I wish mine looked that good.

As far as the spacing goes, my father-in-law's '72 has a similar issue. The backspacing on the rear rims was different than that on the fronts, so the tires are a little different width to make up the difference.

Thanks guys...yea...I liken this cruiser to Jesus's description of the Pharisees..."whitewashed tombs full of dead man's bones" .... in other words, looks great at a glance, but once you get to really know it, then you get to see the real deal....It's got a lot of hidden stuff to fix. Next up - new shackles, springs, bushings. What lift would you all say is on this? 2", 3"...how do I know which springs to order?

It looks like the pic is showing that your hood is not lining up on the passenger side corner.

Mine did the same thing after a frame swap. I didn't notice it until everything was tightened down. After close inspection, the body was definatly not square on the frame (or more likely, the frame is not square under the body. Since it was a trail rig, I didn't worry about it.

You could try loosing all the body mounts, fenders, apron..etc. Take some of the weight off with a hoist and see if things line up better. Seems like a long shot but you never know.

You are right. The hood is a little off. I'm not going to do all that you recommend...but, I will replace all the shackles, bushings and may be the leaf springs..

I rate vehicles by feet. As in how many feet away do you have to be before you don't notice the flaws.

My FJ40 is a 20 footer.
