Today is a rough day for my wife and I. Over the past 6 months, Jackson our beautiful yellow lab that I got for my wife 5 years ago on valentines day, has had some issues. We saved him from the anderson animal control and he is atleast 10 yrs old. He has had trouble getting up and what we realize now issues with his bowl movements....we took him to the vet about 2 months ago when he couldn't get up at all one night. The vet diagnosed it as nerve damage and said we would be lucky if he had a year left....we have treated him with medication over the past 2 months and unfortunately it has not helped....We love Jackson so much but have pretty much decided it's not worth him suffering anymore....We're going to take him to the vet on monday to confirm that his condition has worsened.....You may ask why I share this with you....you guys are like a second family to me and I know many of you have a pet that you love....heck Marshall takes Jessie to work with him everyday (talk about spoiled...ha) Tonight I was out pettin Jackson and all he wanted was more petting...it kills me....But give your pet an extra treat tonight for Jackson and let's hope the best for Jackson.....Thanks for reading.

I'm very sorry to hear. We have been there and had to do that too many times. The last one was a miniature schnauzer that was around 10 years old when we rescued her from the pound. We named her Lannie (E Lan backwards for East Lansing - where we lived when we found her). We ended up spending around $350 a month on her for medication during her last few years. We would do it again in a heartbeat.

:frown:

Because they are family... This is my old hunting companion, (black one)we lost her after 16 years. I had to send my stepfather to put her down, I couldn't do it. She didn't have a proper right hip (accident in and ice storm one year) but she could out hunt most dogs even after the surgery. The yellow one is my current wuss (she's quite gunshy after an unfortunate smelting accident, wait that is from something else) but she is a big baby...

I have had my own dog(s) since I was 6...Never gets easier when you lose one.
Chuck, I feel your pain.
So sorry for your loss

that sucks bro, know what your going through.

I adopted an aussie about 5 years ago (he was about 5-7 at the time) and he was slowly starting to lose muscle mass/have issues standing over the past year/two. He was almost deaf and blind.

Finally it got to the point he coudn't get up.

Had to put him down about 2 mos ago.

My thoughts are with you.

Seems that wheeling people are also dog people. We have most all been in your position a time or two and we all feel your pain. They are our friends, our protectors. Seeing them suffer is something I have a terrible time with myself, so know that you and Jackson are in our prayers.

"Jack" which is my son's nickname as well. He was 4mo. old when I took him to Clemson with me. Almost 15 when one day he just couldn't stand up....one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. Cried like a fat 275lb. baby.

Check this link out... Cruisers, cool luggage and a good story... Have some kleenex nearby if you are a dog person...

God bless you and your family. It just seems like yesterday we lost Scout.
She had been to so many wheeling trips with us that one of the reasons we don't wheel much now is
the memory is still painful.
I still can't watch the old videos.
My heart goes out to ya Pal!

Thank you all for the kind words and thoughts....Jackson is at peace tonight....he is up in the great land chasing an endless supply of squirrels and his treat bowl will never empty.....love ya boy

Chuck I had not seen this post before, and I am terribly sorry you have had to go through this. In many ways it is harder to do this than watch a human loved one deteriorate and perish. I know you are comforted knowing he is in no more pain, and that he will be waiting for you...
Be strong my friend, remember the good times, put up some pictures and someday the pain will subside...
