Great info thanks for adding that!
There’s the fourbie exchange podcast on spotify and instagram that talks about trends and prices of old 4x4’s. There are some good bits of info from that guy. I think he was also on Dan’s Classic Landcruiser podcast fairly recently talking about his consignment business. He had some interesting thoughts considering he’s in the business of selling for owners. I think hes also on youtube.
Here’s the spotify link on the last podcast of 4x4 Classics report

Interesting listen and perspective on the 40 series. I keep seeing earlier 40s sit in the classified section - seems like that may be where some of the value is to be taken. Would love a late 60s early 70s FST. But have a later series 40 that I am overly invested in ( and that I love). No room for more than 1 old car in my household - the CEO denies the repeated requests

Yeah seems like things are moving a little better. Between the Mud classifieds and BaT it seems like the market is settling on $25-35K being the sweet spot for pretty clean drivers.

Out of the last 2 months, 22 40s sold on BaT and of those,
3 were ~$70K
1 was ~$50K
1 was ~$40K
10 were between $25-35K ($24-36K if we're being precise)
7 were under $20K (few oddballs in there)
10 didn't hit reserve

Someone should start a show where they track and discuss prices of older cars. I'd watch it.

I'm still lurking, waiting for the right one to come up. Gonna shoot for $25-30K

Most good buys will be found off BAT, but that mustard '76 that just sold for 26.5k looks to be a great buy .

Do you know what you are looking for out of a 40, or just waiting for something that tickles the itch when you see it and fits the budget?

I’d rather spend a few K more for a Mud truck than a BaT truck. This 72 was better than expected from Mud classifieds last month.

I wouldn't trust anything off BAT without seeing it in person and inspecting like a regular private party sale.
They seem to have very minimal vetting for misrepresented vehicles and crappy work on listings I've seen for cruisers and other vehicles I like to watch.
It's usually the work of bidders and random commentators to vet the vehicle well, sometimes that happens well other times it doesn't.

Yup agreed with all. And don't forget there are buyer's fees on top which we don't see. I just used it as it's probably the easiest way to see a bunch of actual numbers in one place.

I would go with a Mud or local purchase from an enthusiast myself. If I had $37K at the time I would have loved to snag this one:

I agree with buying from a mud member is the best option. Most sellers here are knowledgeable and very honest with information on what they’re selling. The forum members do a pretty good job of scrutinizing the ads and giving good input. The last three out of four Landcruisers I’ve purchased have been sight unseen from mud members. All were great transitions from good folks. I trust this site more than any other source.

They aren’t doing much besides listing, and now that it’s a high volume their staff seems to be spread a little thin. PS- they take offense if accused of using AI for the listing body.

That’s my 60 and the 40 from the ad you linked.

Was it a personal purchase to replace the one you sold? I know its nona my business, just curious. I would imagine as nice as your last one was, it was probably stressful "using" it as perfect as it was.

I have used BAT to sell and buy several vehicles (maybe 6)..not just 40’s and 45’s. The bidding percentage fee goes to the credit card immediately as the winner is determined. The “poetic license”taken on some listings is deep… the one that I see on almost every listing is how the steering wheel is framed by the “ insert your typical cluster” wording. Or, “ owner states the oil and filter we changed in preparation for the sale”and the photos show a rusty, greasy chassis…as if that’s all that is wrong with it.

bAT is really convenient though. if you do your homework, BAT has some really nice vehicles and some beautiful restorations but, like some have said, go see them or know WTF you’re looking at. I had to sell my 1925 Henderson motorcycle. It was so perfect it would need to be a living room display. I could see driving it around and getting a stone chip in a fender…BAT was not around then. This bike was featured in a national motorcycle magazine and a guy in Switzerland tracked it down and got in touch via the license plate displayed in the photos

Over my 58 years of buying or selling my vehicles. I wasn’t selling to new drivers who didn’t understand anything about the vehicle. If you wanted a Land Cruiser, you learned about it. Is anyone motivated to buy something based on poetry? We used the “Want Ad Press”. It was a newspaper type booklet that cost about .60 cents to buy and IIRC, $3.00 for the ad

It is for a customer, and is getting disc brakes and EPS for him to enjoy over next summer, more than likely an engine upgrade at some point.

I’m not sure what direction i’m going to take my next personal build. Just need to find the time to start on it.

Loved going through “Truck Trader” when I was a kid, didn’t love my mom yelling at me for having black fingers from the cheap ink.

“Just need to find the time to start on it.”

From personal real life experience…. Get started on it …weird “stuff” jumps into your life every day just to challenge you. I should have done this FJ40 20 yrs ago. How much longer will there be to enjoy it…. Will you see an 90 yr old knuckle47 waving to you from the drivers seat?

I F*%$ing hope so….😂

I got my last 45, the blue one, out of the local rag in ‘94, for $2700. I had 7 LCs at that point and swore off the paper. I managed to stay on the wagon until 2007, when I got the brown 83/60 that I was recently telling @majdomo about. Rust free with an ARB brushguard for $2800, I couldn’t not buy it.

I’ve been’clean’ since then. @kulangot helped my recovery by telling me: the deal of a lifetime comes along every six months!

I want to say my own '83 60 is the end of it, but I know better than to say stuff like that :)

Why are there so many for sale?? It’s because there are twice as many here as there was 20 years ago. Columbian, Venezuelan, Saidi, Banderantes…
When ICON restomods hit $100k the floodgates opened.

That will never happen with Broncos and Scouts.

He literally pulled up to my shop THE NEXT DAY in his newest Toyota purchase.😛
