More and more I’m seeing two extremes. Those of us who have owned our 40(s) &/or other Landcruisers since before they were crazy expensive and new owners who have deep pockets.

I bought mine in Dec ‘91 for about $1000 USD. I put about $1000 a year into it on average till I had about $10k USD into it (and about 200ish hours labour into it). It has been a solid rig for many years. Fast forward 20 years and I probably have about $15k into it total. Now some of the sheet metal haven’t previously repaired needs some repair. I don’t have a metric crap-ton of money and enjoy fabrication, so it’ll take me a while, but my son and I are going to cut out and replace all the rusty areas in the remaining floor and fix it ourselves.

I just bought some solid front fenders from a guy who I feel is on the other end of the spectrum. Seems like a great guy, and I got along well with him. Just has much deeper pockets than I.

He bought a 40 off eBay… sight unseen for an undisclosed amount of money. He considered a jeep but then bought a 40. After driving it for a while he decided it wasn’t big enough to meet his needs when mountain biking. Having owned mine for almost 34 years, I can understand that.
So he is widening it and stretching it to fit on an 80 series frame and stretching it 10” more. He considered a new 2.8 Cummins but thought he could save a few bucks by buying a 1/2 cut with a Duramax, transmission, and transfer case for $8000. By the time he got the “new” engine he was into it for $14k. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s into it for $30-40-50k by the time he has built his 112” wheel base Landcruiser.

Now 40s aren’t for everyone. With a softening economy many owners are seeing prices fall and if they don’t wrench on it themselves, bills will keep coming. If they aren’t in it for the long haul, they cut their losses before it sinks them.

I'm a fairly new owner, bought an FJ40 last year, and I have TINY pockets. A bad combination!

In that case, you're looking at repairs, improvements and maintenance on the instalment plan ;)

I started my 40 addiction 40 years ago in direct competition with the diaper fund for our first born! Talk about an installment plan!

51 yrs ago I was making about $350 a month…75 for rent, 75 for food, 30 for gas and around $100 a month to Downey and Man-A-Fre. The rest for cheap dates

If you’re mechanically inclined at all, you’ll be able to save a fortune by doing your own repairs. 40s are simple and straightforward making them a great vehicle to learn to repair. You will quickly learn that at any given time you can have all your questions answered.

Hey @FloridaLife , hows your project going? Did you get it out of the paint shop?

Here is a nice runner for 14k considering all the work that’s gone into it.

I call this my “personal financing plan”.

Find a good deal on a truck and fork over all my play money. Great, now I got the bones.

Wait about a six months to accumulate a little capital. Buy the parts for the most important work (usually brakes or engine base lining) or parts that were missing in the original purchase.

Wait another six months, repeat for the next work that needs to happen.

Repeat. Somewhere in there I hunt deals on upgrades and mods like armor or bling stuff that isn’t 100% necessary.

At the end I pay for a well sorted truck over time because I couldn’t afford to plunk down all the money up front. I do all my own work of course because a mechanic is out of the question. It’s a great way to eventually spend $10000 on a $1000 truck that’s worth $5000 when you’re all done.

Jorge does great work and that 40 is super dialed in. Can’t believe it’s still for sale. It’s a great runner for somebody looking for a solid unrestored rig that needs the top put together.

Lol

Latest violent crime per capita DATA

Oh, and Florida guy, a Florida city is ranked higher then either Chicago (#92) or NY (#67) haha

This is such an obvious canard .

It's because those cities have stopped reporting, or relabeled, violent crime to things that won't Spike their statistics.

Interesting though, to see who falls for it.

There was a meme during the pandemic that said something to the effect of 60 deaths in Chcago attributed to the flu...complicated by gunshot wounds!

Owning a 40 is like having a teenager, sometimes its okay but then it can be a pain in your pocket when it acts up... the high points... no college/university fees, so you save truck loads of $$ the low points if your committed to keeping it is its health coverage... either way you're better off..as the 40 will always raise a smile... Teenagers not so much especially when puberty kicks in & they become hormonal maniac's prone to pouting & tantrums...

I’ve noticed some positive movement in the classified section here. There are some solid examples that have moved within a month or two of the ad being placed.
Looks like the market is tightening up not just for 40’s but for 60’s and 80’s as well. 60 prices have seen a significant lowering back to reasonable prices and 40’s are taking their rightful place at the top.
People wanting to buy 80’s from the other models is rising as clean examples are getting scarce. Maybe the Landcruiser economy is on the rise again after a dismal last three years.

Yeah seems like things are moving a little better. Between the Mud classifieds and BaT it seems like the market is settling on $25-35K being the sweet spot for pretty clean drivers.

Out of the last 2 months, 22 40s sold on BaT and of those,
3 were ~$70K
1 was ~$50K
1 was ~$40K
10 were between $25-35K ($24-36K if we're being precise)
7 were under $20K (few oddballs in there)
10 didn't hit reserve

Someone should start a show where they track and discuss prices of older cars. I'd watch it.

I'm still lurking, waiting for the right one to come up. Gonna shoot for $25-30K

Great info thanks for adding that!
There’s the fourbie exchange podcast on spotify and instagram that talks about trends and prices of old 4x4’s. There are some good bits of info from that guy. I think he was also on Dan’s Classic Landcruiser podcast fairly recently talking about his consignment business. He had some interesting thoughts considering he’s in the business of selling for owners. I think hes also on youtube.
Here’s the spotify link on the last podcast of 4x4 Classics report
