Why an air pump can fail.
There is a "minor" design flaw.
The air in take is on the filtered side of the air filter.
So is the vent hose from the crank case (Valve cover)
If you have a higher blow by on an old engine or a vac vent line problem, oily air/smoke can be sucked in through the air pump intake hose!
Remedy I applied is to install a hose inside the air filter ending above the carburetor, thus hopefully reducing the possibility to get oily air.
Alternate solution would be to give the air pump a small independent external air intake filter!
