i've got an fj62 with a 1hz/h55 and i'm running 3.70's and 33x10.50 bfg mt's. i just took it on a 260mile trip that was all highway and i averaged 15mpg. it's not loaded down too much. just an arb, 8274 and a rear kaymar. i just replaced the beb's and changed the timing belt, but that hasn't affected the mpg's. i haven't fooled with the fuel and the po said he had it turned down somewhat for better fuel economy. shouldn't i get better fuel economy?

Are you allowing for the 16% that your odometer is out?

PS: Land Cruisers have 3.70 gears, not 3.73s

yes, my mileage is from a gps.

could the pump be out of time?

3.70's -got it, thanks. i really would like to change to 4.11's, but want to know the capabilities of the 3.70's before going through the trouble of changing.

If your 15mpg is in US gallons then it's not far from the 12-14 L/100km that a loaded HZ cruiser normally gets.
How fast were you driving?

If your 15mpg is imperial gallons, then yes that sucks.

it is in US gallons. i was driving between 60mph and 75mph in rolling hills. from other posts i've read i would have expected closer to 20mpg, but if 15 is normal, i can live with that. i just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything out of wack.

I'd expect 8-9 km/l from a truck like that at ~65mph on the flat, that's 20mpg US. So your fuel consumption is about what's expected given the speed and terrain.

Roscoe should chime in soon.

I think mileage is low, actually. The fully loaded troopy with a 1HZ that we drive to baja a lot gets around 20 in hilly terrain, and so does the HZJ80. 15 is too low, IMO, especially driven rather carefully. The 3.7 plus 33s is a perfect combination.

How are the EGTs? any black smoke? brakes dragging (hot)?
cheers,
Jan

if you have a turbo .. maybe yes .. bubt without it .. IMOP not .. NA would like 4.11 for 33"

heavy foot
heavy vehicle for that speed
dirty injectors?
pump timing

try at the double nickle and report back...

In my hzj78/R151 ( hz powered Prado), 4.88 and 33's I'm getting around 23 mpg mixed driving/ 9 km per Ltr / 11 Ltr per 100 km. That is loaded up and empty (camping and dd)

The FJ62 should not have 4.11 ratio ?

So is the gear were changed during the swap?

I am getting around 20mpg in a similar setup. Main differences are a turbo, 4.11s(stock) and about 6000lb from bumpers/winch/armor/trip gear..

I think the 1HZ prefers to run at higher revs, similar to the 3FE.

Seems to get consistent mpg no matter the conditions or driving style in the 6 or so months since the conversion.

heavy foot-probably a little bit, but not enough to bring it down to 15 if it should normally be at 20.

have no idea about the injectors or pump timing. will try at 55.

swapped in some cable lockers with 3.70's.

My 1HZ is getting around 12.8/100 averaged over a 12 month period and normally unloaded,no winch, just bullbar.
I have 4.11 and 32inch tyres.Speedo is checked asgainst a GPS
In US gallons thats 18.3 mpg.

Kevin m rowland did the 1HZ conversion into his 60 series and tried both the 3.7 and 4.11 diffs, and in the end he was happier with the 4.11
Try sending hIm a PM for his fuel consumption figures or read his posts

egt's tend to run a little warmer at high speeds. if i just kept the peddle on the floor, it would run about 75 to 80 and eventually overheat in the hills. i would have to ease up to keep from getting too hot.

Did you do this conversion? If so, I'd love to see a write up and some pics.

i did not do the engine conversion. it was done by steve's offroad in atlanta, i believe.

You do know that 75mph burns 55% more fuel than 60mph?

Speed is the biggest factor in fuel economy. Especially in a landcruiser shaped like a lumpy brick.

no, i did not realize it was that bad. that would put me around 23mpg. i'll give it a try.

just talked to a buddy who was behind me some on the highway and he said i was blowing out a good bit of black smoke on the hills. too much fuel and not enough air, right? i think i'll turbo it before i change the gears.

yes, sounds like too much fuel.
