seat replacement - fj60

ok- i'm thinking about replacing the front seats in my '60. something a bit more comfortable, that doesn't require a lot of modification to put in, and something i can find at a junkyard, as opposed to man-a-fre or specter. surely someone has put some comfy buckets in..

Re:seat replacement - fj60

anything but stock and you will be doing some modifications somewhere be it seat brackets or fabricating adaptors to make the "new" seats fit.

having been down this road, you might consider rebuilding the factory seats if the frame is still tight and the reclining mechanism is still in good working order. SOR has good replacement foam and from there you can add anything you want to increase the comfort factor: seat heaters, lumbar support, memory foam, more bolster, map pockets, custom fabric, etc., etc.....

let me know if you want pics....

I just put in seats from a Mitsubishi Diamante in mine - bigger, firmer and much more comfy than stock. Saab and Volvo seats are also favorites, although I had trouble finding any older ones in good shape (new ones have side impact airbags).

Here's one thing I found: buckets from little sporty cars were generally too small and kinda flimsy and buckets from trucks were too big. Sport sedans seats seemed to be the ticket.

Just about anything I looked at required some degree of fabrication and bracketry:

Hey dogboy,
Can you just buy the foam pad for the bottom of the front seats. My upholstery is in good condition, but I would like firmer pads to sit on.

I know you mentioned that you wanted to go the junkyard route but I just replaced the seats in my 40 with corbeau baha ss seats. They kick major ass. I made the seat mounts for around 30 dollars in materials but you can buy the mounts for about 40. a piece. Even if i reupholstered the stock seats i wouldnt be this happy.

While replacing covers and foam are options for stock seats, they are just not very good to begin with - very little lateral support and too soft. My new boneyard seats actually make the truck feel like it handles better. There are also some cheap racing seats (Recarro knockoffs) available from Pep Boys etc. but for my needs they were a little too aggressive (and expensive).

Benji,
yes, you can just buy the foam bottom cushions: try SOR - they sit very well...

i'll try and post some seat pics tomorrow....stand-by

I've got toyota Supra or Celica seats in mine and love them. They have all the side support I"ve ever needed. They don't look like they have much padding but they are shaped to the point that you don't need it. I can put the cruiser on steep side angles and not have to worry about hanging on, even with the doors off. Picked them up at junk yard for $50 and had them reapolstered (spelling?) and there great.

i just finished my interior in my 40, i dont know how different a 60's brackets are, but these SABB Leather seats went into my 40 fine, the front 2 holes are exactly the same width and i ran some angle iron back to the rear holes and stock rear mounting points.. they are heated and i got them from a junk yard for like $10 a pop!

Carpet kit on the way and paint job, oh.... and turbo ready for mounting.

The Supra seats rock for comfort, just a pain getting in and out of because of the side bolstering.

I had mine recovered in leather. They upholsters re-did the padding. They feel nice and no mods.

I used Mercedes E-Class 8 way power/heated in my FJ60. Front bracket holes lined up perfect, rears i had to fab some L brackets for. They were very nice....$50 from a junk yard.
