Hi, I'm new to this message board. I have a 93 LC that makes a whining noise when I push the accelerator when moving. When I take my foot off the accelerator the noise stop but as soon as I push the accelerator the noise is back again. The noise starts @ 20mph & it sound like it coming from front end. Can someone please help me? ???

Welcome,

You have a common problem with many possible answers. To start, check that your drive shafts are properly lubed (do a search on "lube" to learn how). Then do a search on "whining" or "whistling" or "humming". There are lots of threads with variations on this theme that could give you ideas.

Try isolating the sound with a few tests
-check your tires and tire pressure and try varying it a few psi
-does the sound alter if you are turning?
-does it seem to be synched to the throttle or to road speed?
-visually check your exhaust system ?
-open each of the front and rear windows in turn and compare the sound to try to isolate it, then try with the tailgate open
-try revving while stopped with the hood open

Are you 100% sure it is coming from the front end? You might already know this..BUT with the OEM Stock EXHAUST setup the 80 series rig normally make a 'whine' sound with acceleration. When you take your foot off the gas...no whine..when you put the pedal to the metal it is a whine. It ALMOST (but not quite) sounds like a supercharger/turbocharger whine. This whine is due to the BIG MOFO MUFFLER in combination with the little Oil Can resonator at the very tip of the exhaust system. THIS IS A NORMAL WHINE..IF the whine is in fact coming from your exhaust vs. your front end.

If you dont like the whine...then just get a new muffler and ditch the oil can at the tip and the whine will disappear. If you like the whine then do nothing and keep on wheeling!

IF the whine is coming from your front rather than your exhaust..then i have absolutely no idea.

later..

did the noise just start? or has been there for a while?

might also be aftermarket belts.

Both aftermarket and OEM belts, if overtightened, will cause a whining sound.

Yes, do the search. There has been multiple discussions about this with no fix. It seems the common mystery whine starts about 50mph, but only while accelerating.

Another thing that poeple are doing it taking off the front driveshaft and it does not whine anymore.

If you figure it out, let us know.

Need a better description............and as has already been asked, is this a new sound or one from day 1?

In addition, do you have the capability to record the sound so that inquiring ears may hear it?

Welcome to the board.

If you have a digital camera that records MPGs then I can help extract the audio in a wav file to help with distribution. Trust me this can be one helluva short cut to a solution :D

pretty sure!. i call the locate dealer & they said it might me a pinion beraing seal. i just hate to pay 70.00 for the just to look @ it

thanks for welcome everyone! after reading everones comments i check everything everyone suggest. & i notice the sound is coming directly from under where my shifter. i have also notice when turn i'm getting some popping sounds from the frontend. anyone more suggest. i hate to pay 70.00 for the dealer to just tell me whats wrong with it.....helpppppppppppppppppp

Popping from the front end when turning? Birfields. When some of the more experienced Birfield guys see this I imagine they will fill you in. I've never experienced it first hand but others have. Until then, you might search for "popping" etc.

thank for the help everyone, since the my posting I had the muffler & exhaust checked, wheel bearing replace, front end rebuild again, tire checked & rotated, I have no turbo or supercharger on it, & greased your u-joints & driveshaft. I also so notice vibration from the high low shifter when truck is accelerator. The sound only starts when accelerator & it has to be over 20mph. The sound is not as loud over 70 mph but is still there. One mechanic told me it might be the transmission but I don’t he knew what he was talking about. Does anyone else have anymore suggestion help?

Even after replacing the muffler and removing the resonator, my exhaust system still has the whine, and I love it; it sounds turbo-ish! Actually the coolest sounds came when I recently chopped the entire exhaust system off after the cat. The thing sounded more like a jet revving up than a truck!!! It sounded so cool I wanted to run the thing that way permanently but I realized that the step slider was getting hot from the exhaust hitting it, would have worked wonders with winter snows though!

P.S. I have also heard ( no pun intended ) that the use of the K&N type filters can exagerate this whine at specific speeds. HTH.

it wish was an exhaust issue, but the whinning sound is coming from the front area.
