Whine from front during acceleration/deceleration (1 Viewer)

Or it is just normal howl from wearing gears and ignore and enjoy

I've been putting my window down whenever I'm around another 470 and the vast majority of them have the same noise. Some worse than others. Some way worse than yours (like early 90s Chrysler mini-van bad). Mine has it faintly, but I'm sure it'll get worse over time.

Hmm, interesting. Then I guess mine developed it so early at 100K because the previous owner never changed diff and tcase fluid. I thought some 4runners and fj cruisers have very similar tcases and transmissions. I wonder if they develop similar howl/whine over time.

Showed the video with the noise to one mechanic (not specialized in toyota/lexus) and he said that he had seen a similar noise on a Mercedes and the the noise was fixed by replacing the clogged tranny oil filter. I'm wondering if it would make sense trying doing this on my GX470.

Looks like on GX470 the filter is a strainer LEXUS OEM FACTORY TRANSMISSION OIL STRAINER 2003-2009 GX470 | eBay

Has anyone replaced that?

Forgot to update the thread: did a transmission service since my last post - replaced ATF (3 drain and fills) and filter (strainer). The filter was not clogged or contaminated, no metal shavings were found on the magnets. The whine / howl hasn't changed since the service.

@Perveance just reread this thread and watched/listened to your video again. Wish I could offer up something other than moral support - but it really sounds internal to the transfer case or front diff. It is very interesting that when you removed the front driveshaft, the noise went away (if I read correctly): that immediately made me think transfer case front output shaft or bearing, or pinion.

Sadly it seems the only way to pinpoint, aside from wholesale parts replacement, may be to put the GX on a 4-wheel dyno and replicate removing driveshafts etc.

FWIW, my 07 doesn't make this noise.

What fluids did you use when you replaced them? Specifically in the tcase and diff.

Yes, correct, the noise went away without the front driveshaft. Is there any way to check whether transfer case front output shaft is bad or not? If I were to repair it, should I look at full tcase rebuild or just replace the front output shaft and bearing?

The output bearing or the front diff are your most likely culprits of sure.

Unfortunately, not many ways to test aside from R&R

Apart from this noise I'm happy with my GX, so I don't mind repairing it. So far I've done most of servicing myself, but I'm afraid rebuilding tcase is beyond my competence level. Is there any simple way to replace tcase output shaft or does it require opening the tcase which obviously requires removing the tcase from the vehicle?

Since it seems it could be either xfer front output or diff, repairing/replacing both would be expensive.

Looking at the FSM, you can check the front diff preload, which if it is way out would indicate a problem requiring repair. You'd have to drop the driveshaft and put a torque wrench on the pinion nut:

Bearing
New
0.98 to 1.57 N*m (10 to 16 kgf*cm, 8.7 to 13.9 in.*lbf)
Reused
0.49 to 0.78 N*m (5 to 8 kgf*cm, 4.3 to 6.9 in.*lbf)

If the preload is greater than the specification, replace the bearing spacer.
If the preload is less than the specification, retighten the nut to 13 N*m (130 kgf*cm, 9 ft*lbf) a little at a time until the specified preload is reached.
Torque: 370 N*m (3,773 kgf*cm, 273 ft.*lbf) or less

If the maximum torque is exceeded while retightening the nut, replace the bearing spacer and repair the preload procedure. Do not loosen the nut to reduce the preload.

I haven't found the FSM/specs for our transfer case and how to check runout etc on the front output, sorry...

try these

Resurrecting this post from the dead. I listened to OPs video and this is the exact same issue my 08 GX is having. Anyone know if this whine is normal or indicative of an issue?

Usually the driveshaft. Can be the preload in the diff, or wheel bearings (unlikely).

Makes sense to me. I think I found the OPs final resolution. He commented on his video that when he lifted his GX a few years later, he also replaced the CVs at the same time and one of those, or both resolved this noise. I wonder if it is the angle of the CVs in regards to the dif that did it as opposed to the CVs themselves. Would that affect the preload? I am getting a little bit of steering wheel shimmy at high speeds and some steering wheel vibration when turning in parking lots so I could definitely see it being any of the above, or just have multiple issues going on. I just got the GX so not too familiar with it yet, just tackling one thing at a time.

Hi, did you finally resolve this issue ? I have similar issue with my GX 460 2014. Its really annoying. It occurs after 30mins of drive and between 20 and 50km/hr.
