Guys,
I removed the frame and dropped it off to get sandblasted, galvanized, and powdercoated. The front axle's been cleaned, rebuilt and has new rotors and 4runner brakes.

While the frame is out (my truck is sitting on jackstands and wood beams), what else should I do before I get the frame back here in a couple of weeks?

How hard is it to rebuild the rear axle?

I'm looking for any suggestions!

If you have a SF rear, it's more work than a FF, but the only real hard part is removing the bearing, if you don't have a proper puller. Couple of threads here on it, done with a long iron pipe.

Have you painted or done anything to the undercarriage? I painted mine with chassis Saver and am contemplating some duplicolor bed liner or equivalent over that...

Under the body, there seems to be some sort of waxy undercoating. I was quoted $1500 to have that sand blasted off and then have it rhinolined...a little too much cash for me right now. So I may just leave it alone.

Is it worth it to have the gas tank cleaned and rust proofed?

I'm prolly gonna do that too, but with the POR15 kit or similar from Eastwood... Unless I buy an extended range tank.

Any idea what the cost is to farm it out?

This is what I'm having done: two step sandblasting, galvanizing, semi-gloss powdercoating (close to OEM color).

It's for: frame, 2 skid plates, 2 fenderwells, tranny x-member, gas tank x-member, rear hitch

$1075 for sandblasting and powdercoating. $300 for galvanizing.
I tried to figure out how much time it would take me to sandblast and paint the frame myself...Cleaning the grime off all of those parts would take a few days. And knowing me, to paint would take more than a week and the quality wouldn't be half as good. It would probably take me about $250 in Rust Bullet paint and materials alone.

Just wondering why you are having the stuff sandblasted if they are getting galvanized. When I had my frame galvanized it went through an acid dip tank that completely cleaned the frame before being dipped in the galvanizing tank.

IMHO, don't use the DIY gas tank kits! They sorta suck, and end up clogging the gas lines, etc. Use google to fine the nearest "gas tank-renu" franchise and have them deal with the tank. They usually do great work.

So, from what I've learned, oil-based paints are not removed during the hot-dip galvanizing process. Since I started putting Rust Bullet on the frame before I got fed up with cleaning and degreasing it, the guys at the galvanizing shop said that the galvanizing process may not remove that hard paint that's on the frame.

So, I opted for the sandblasting before the hot-dip and powdercoating afterwards...

I've got no idea on gas tank cleaning, etc...still looking into that.

I've had to remove some of the rust bullet from various spots that I painted over in my haste... The stuff is stinking hard, particularly when top-coated. It's also very chemical-resistant. Media blasting was the way to go.

Who is doing the work? R.W. Little?

El Dorado Paint on Commercial street is doing the sandblasting and powdercoating. San Diego Galvanizing is doing the galvanizing portion.

In2Cruisers, do you know anyone that can come over and weld on my motor mounts for me in a few weeks?

That makes sense now.

Where you at? Let me ask a couple guys and get back to you.

El Dorado seems to be a good place, have not had any work done by them but talked to the owner one day...seems like a nice guy...and look to do quality work
