These are the tires i have narrowed it down to. Use will be 75% street.

or this one. Bogger trxxus sts, trxxus mud terrain, baja claw radial, xterrain.

This one:

Firestone Destination M/T.

I know a couple of guys running the baja claw tire, good for what we have around the midwest, but my 80 with destination's left 'em all at the bottom.

I thought there was only one choice?

I got the X-Terrains, one of your choices, and found them almost as quiet on the road as my BFG AT/kos. In the snow they were fantastic. They self clean very well no matter how heavy the snow got. My tire guy was able to balance them on a set of factory steels with just a single weight on either side. I got them off a company down in florida that I found on EBay. That company still has their site up so you might check there for pricing.

I didn't think he was asking for opinions of what tire you guys think is good. I beleive he narrowed the field down to 4 choices and was looking for responses on those 4 choices.

So lets try to all focus a little and help the guy out.

Pretty silly to get MT tires if expected offroad usage is less than 1/4.

If you wheeling plans involve mud, I'd drop the STS off of the list. I don't think that they will clear the mud at places like Tellico or Uwharrie (SP?). I have the TrXus MTs and so far I think they are awesome. Much better in the wet and slippery stuff than than my previous MTRs. I've wheeled with an old CJ on 35 inch Baja Claws and I wasn't overly impressed.
Cheers.

I hear you cruiserman, but does anyone use thier cruiser for greater than 75% off road use (80 series DD i mean). Seriously, after pulling my buddy out and blowing a regular road tire last night, and realizing that when i do go offroading the radials just plain suck!

Landtank, the xterrains are my first choice. I was just noticing how nice the truxxusMTs were and a bit cheaper.

Dan, are those things tough to balance? I have heard that interco tires are great for just offroad use, but they were a real bear to keep balanced and were heavy.

Thanks for the input guys. I really don't want the BFG MT's. Everyone has those, and if i wanted that i would have bought a jeep.

They are heavy because they are thick. Sure, they are harder to balance, but just about any large lug mud tire in that large a size is.

Dan, are you running those or know someone who is?

I know several people running them (there also some on board folks using them).

I am ordering mine within the next month or so (if I can stay in town for more than 4 days).

Of the choices listed, I'd go with the ProComps (Xterrains). They have a good road hazzard warranty and their "buy 3 get 1 free" makes them a pretty good buy. I've never run them, but have seen them on the trial and have a couple non-LC buddies who have them on their heeps. I've heard some good things. The only negative I've heard about them (for trail use) is that they're made from a harder rubber compound. This is good for road wear, but not as nice on the trail where something softer would give more grip.

Personally, I have MTRs on mine -- although I've thought about going with the Xterrains, I'll be staying with Goodyear for a while.

Note that everyone voting for the Xterrains is from the west...

HERE IN THE EAST.. the Xterrains SUCK. They DO NOT self clean like the Claws do... I'd go w/ the Claws or the Truxxus M/T's... I've seen good results w/ the Truxxus tires, but stay away from those STS's...

Oh, and MT/R's rule. Period.

DO NOT GET X-TErrians!! If you want some I have 4 that I will sell ya!! I bought them for my 80 last November and I hate them. I have already put a big cut in the side wall all the way to the treads! They chunk off like crazy too. I have always run BFG and I am not sure what made me buy ProComps. Also, when I air down to about 22PSIG they flex to much. I have dinged the rims from rocks. I think the 80 is just to heavy to run the x- terrians or maybe I should have gone with something bigger then a 285. Just my opinion. Did not really like them in the snow either.

The Trxus is hard to keep balanced, wear quickly, are great off road, not that great of a daily driving tire. I would not buy a set again. I ended up getting a set of used MT/R for my daily driving tire and getting some bias Swampers for the wheeling. You can have interco's radials they suck for quality control. Just my experence. If you want a wheeling tire get one, and then get the Daily driving tire. I was a slave to my tires (as christo put it) I was balanceing my tires every two weeks. One real pain. I know some on this board have had good luck with the trxus but I did not. Do not have any personal experence with the others. good luck robbie

Thanks for the input robbie. I was thinking it was you talking about not being able to get the trxus to stay balanced.

I think i have narrowed it down the the xterrains (harder compound for better road wear) and the trxus mtr's (just worried about keeping them balanced).

I have to make a move on these quick as i am running without a spare right now. Plus my radials are almost worn out, so buying one new to replace the blown out will not work.

Hmmmm....
Since when did Massachusetts move to the west coast? At the time you posted, Rick and were the only 2 pointing at the Xterrains. FWIW, I'd prefer the MTRs over any of the choices listed and that's what I run, so we agree there.

The tough part of this is finding something that fits the 75/25 requirement.

So...why not the MTRs concrete? Design? Cost?

I'm intrigued by the Firestones suggested by Doc, but as far as I know, they don't come in a 315/75 R16, so I haven't picked up a set.
