Which Winch?

Which winch are you using? Why? and what do you think the best choice for a 100 with TJM T3 bumper is?
I'd like to go with synthetic line and weight is a consideration due to AHC. I've always used Warn 8274 on my 40's. So school me on my options.

Do I need a 12K winch for this size truck? I wont be winching up waterfalls or anything, most of the time I tend to be un-sticking other people. I would like to be able to self recover in snow and deep mud, pull some downed trees etc. but wont be doing much hard wheeling.

I had a 9k on my 80 and it wasn't enough, even with a snatchblock. I replaced it with an M12 and didn't regret it one bit. I'll go that route on the 100 as well.

Get a big'un...12k+ if possible and don't look back.

S: of course, the M12 will be stronger but keep in mind it's also pretty heavy.

The 9.5XP fit with very little modding. It is according to one of the Warn techs I spoke to before I purchased it new: Under rated (load wise).

If you bury a modded/equipped 100 in frame deep mud I don't think you'd get it out with a 12K winch...there's almost no end to how big a winch you need to eliminate all the risk in any possible recovery situation.

So plan for the most typical/reasonable risk/use. The 9.5XP is alot of winch for the money and rating...and it fits onto the TJM 3CS winch plate...you only have to mod the side strap supports due to the extra width of the 9.5XP.

I have used it several times. If I had to do it over again for my 100 & TJM T3C I'd buy the same winch...no questions asked.

Winching. And remember, you only get the maximum load on the first spool and you loose every winding after that.

I'm no expert, but in the professional recovery business, the prefered brand appears to be Ramsey. I've been told by several professionals they make the best industrial stuff. I see tons of Ramsey stuff on tow trucks. I've always assumed their stuff would be good too.

I have a Ramsey that I pulled off of my 80 when I sold it and plan on fitting it into my ARB when I get it shipped next month. I have no idea what modifications I will need to do, but I'm sure I will figure it out. I love my Ramsey. I think most folks think Warn is the best only because there are more being used in the ARB bumpers because that is what ARB recommends. Unless you are using your winch everytime you go wheelin then any of the name brand winches would be fine in my opinion. If you are using your winch everytime you wheel then you should probably pick different people to wheel with... Ha

I have to agree that even though I went 12K, the XP was/is my favorite / best buy assessment. Very tempting based on specs and price. The one to go with if max pulling is not the main concern, IMO. Having said that, a built 100 ain't light...

I agree with you 100% that the winch size is most important! I'm just saying that I believe that all the main brands that are out there have there merits and you would be fine with any of them as long as you purchase one that is large enough to fit your worst case scenario needs.

I think brand is a major factor. The Superwinch I had had a horrible duty cycle and overheated very quickly. The Warn I put on later would pull all day. I trust Warn, but it probably comes down to a Ford/Chev kinda thing.
