which winch for an fj60? (1 Viewer)

I must be a little ass backwards (which probably doesn't surprise many who know me), because I have a Warn 9000 on the 40 ( it came with it), but searched out an 8274 to rebuild and put on the ARB bumper on the 60. I like the look , and the reputation of the 8274. No serious pulls with it, but I have confidence that it will get me out of trouble if I need it.

Digging up another old thread here. In the market for a winch. Warn is here local in Oregon, in fact it 15 minutes from my work. I’ve wanted to add one to my 4plus bumper. I was a Superior Offroad today to get my 2” wheel spacers and saw a 10,000 pound Warn out. I talked with Huston about the price, $1400...wow! He said personally he liked the SmittyBuilt XRC Comp 10 winch with synthetic rope. The price was $500. Sounds awesome but wanted to hear if anybody has had experience with the Smitty Built and there experience. According to Huston Warn winches are made in China.

Looking for winch threads to send to a buddy I found this one...

China makes everything, from top notch stuff to instant garbage. It all comes down to how much the company is willing to pay the Chinese state for their product's quality.

My Warn XD9000i has dragged my 60 up and over ledges (stay with open/open diffs; it'll be fun, they said :p). Those were big asks for any winch, and it did it; and I'll comfortably rely on it to do it again. I once bought a X20 10K from Smitty, then took it back the next day. My personal sentiments are that even after many years of life Warn's fit/finish/feel is still right, and Smittybilt's wasn't right fresh out of the box. Several guys in our club have Smittybilt products and don't have complaints. YMMV.

Bottomline: there is no warranty support to be had from anyone when you're in Nowhereville, and track records matter.

I agree with this which is why I spent the $$ and went with Warn, 12k on ARB bumper. I've had it about 12 years and it has never failed. I used it last week to drag my heavy (ca. 6500 lb) FJ60 through some deep slop.

That there is a STUCK. Good grief 🤣. Looks like fun was had though.

I have always felt that 8k was to light for a 60. I have used 12,5 tmax for years with tons of use and its now on my 80. Have 10k warn on 60 now

I have an 8274. It's been on two full-size rigs and my 62. It pulls harder than my old 9500 Warn ever did.

I have a smitty XRC on my 62 @Hojack and have only used it a couple of times, but I like the synthetic rope, waterproof, and the wireless remote. I’m one of those cheap winch guys and I “splurged” on the XRC when I saw it at my local 4WP. The winch gets pretty good reviews also!

I bought a 2004 8K Warn earlier this winter brand new in the box and never used. The seller was going to put it in a project that fell apart. When I got back to office and told my dad, He goes into the shop and says I can have the 12K Warn. It’s a 90s model. Haven’t installed yet as I’ve been busy with Project Snowball❄️. I’ve played with placement in the 4plus bumper and that’s it.

Biggest problem with too big of winch is usually they are slow and draw a lot of amps. The 8274 is a pig though for amps but it is FAST. Line speed unloaded is as fast as you can walk. If I had a heavy 60 series loaded for bear in the outback, I'd take a 12K warn. If I was lighter and just needed something to get me out of a jam in the Desert, I'd take an 8K of any brand. Whatever kind you choose, learn the way they work and the solenoids. After being stranded a few times, I have learned to carry spare solenoids. That goes for the ones that use the big single type as well. Cheap insurance when you are stuck.

If you actually use your winch often, I would get an 8274. Love those winches. Lots of line (think snatch block) and fast. If it is an occasional pull or you are on a budget, I like the Smittybilt or Harbor Freight units. Not the quality of a Warn, but so much cheaper and still a decent unit. I know that people will scream "It has to be a Warn" but I've seen lots of these cheaper units used on the trail and they work. I have a Smitty on my 80 and it has worked when I've asked it to.

I am always looking for used 8274 winches. They can be had for a reasonable amount of money if you keep looking. And they can be rebuilt and upgraded. You'll end up with a killer winch at a decent price.

I bought a 12.5k HF Badlands winch of Craigslist for $220 new in the box. I just couldn't pass it up. I did some extra weather proofing with gasket maker on the solenoid box and used my own 200amp breaker in place of the fuse system. I've got a 6 ton snatch i'll keep in the truck. It's nicely over powered for the 62, so i think it will work fine...and is incredibly cheap. Just couldn't push myself to pay more for the winch than i did for the bumper. It's heavy though...
