1981 BJ-44 that I am pulling 2200 miles. I would like to install a permanent FRONT tow bar that when I am done can just flip up and stay on the vehicle until I need it and decide to flip it down.

I am speaking of the "A" shaped FRONT mounted units. Any preferences? Any of them rust less than the others? Any of them have any advantages?

Who did you order from?

Search really isn't an option, as this information is usually in pictures, not written in words.

Best,

T

I don't have this one yet but probably will get it. This thing looks pretty solid to me... from the pic at least.

Catalogue Page 30

I've been using the cr@ppy adjustable Chinese type, and I don't trust it.
Its scary not trusting that your rig will keep following you down the freeway! :frown::frown::frown:

Towbar? What's a towbar? Real CruiserHeads drive their rigs.....

Please let's stay on topic. I need to know of stuff people have installed and like. I would really appreciate names, prices, and pics where possible.

Brian... I saw the page 30 catalog's stuff, but from speaking to the guy he has not updated or changed anything in his website for 3 years. When I spoke to him 3 weeks ago about something else, he didn't seem to know a lot of the stuff there. He is a cool guy, it is just that he is a 1 man show apparently so he can't wrench and be webmaster all at once. That is cool and I understand that and I intend no disrespect.

Also sir Pighead... If you ain't breakin' stuff, you ain't drivin' hard enough. Real men break stuff. Real men need towing. Wheeling w/o a winch and a tow bar ain't tough, it's bein' pigheaded.

Stop bein' so pig headed :p.

Best to all,

T

I've had a Smittybuilt tow bar for 20-30 years now. I don't know that it's still manufactured, but it might be. It's very well built and it works great.

I don't leave it on the LC, though, because it normally isn't needed. I leave the brackets attached to the bumper, but pull the bar. I leave the towbar in my pickup with the portable lights and other towing gear when I go on a trip. If needed because of damage to the truck, I just call the wife and she shows up with all of the necessary towing gear. :)

Edit: Just searched on-line. Doesn't look like it's manufactured anymore. Shame, it was a good product. Might find one used, though.

I just bought a Reese Brand from the local TSC farm store. Really heavy, comes with mounts for the front bumper, seems well built. I just pulled my FJ40 300 miles for the first time. Started out pretty slow as I didn't know what to expect. Ended up cruising down the highway at about 65mph. Tracked very nice. I pulled it with a 1 ton dually diesel, Chevy of course. I put everything in neutral, unlocked the front hubs, unbolted the rear driveshaft and tied it to the frame, and took off. I'd rather take my cruiser with me instead of leaving it home when we head north. This is the most reasonable solution. The floor gets so hot on the passenger side, nobody except my 10 years will ride with me in the FJ40. Enjoy!

Well, the one I wanted on Mark's offroad is sold out, as mentioned...

There have got to others guys. Which ones are they?????

Best,

T

Just make one....

It's a friggen A frame... If you don't know how to weld, ask a friend or pay someone to do it...

Buy all the material, cut it to length (mock it up) and take it to the person that'll weld it up for you..

It doesn't have to be fancy
