Howdy all. I am a long time cruiser fan, I have just never owned one. I was into Rovers for a while, and now drive a Scout. I decided it is time to get a cruiser. I want diesel, and have found several I like, most of them are 60's. Then I found a couple of Troopies. Those look cool. Does anyone have any experience with these? What is the general feeling about these? How hard are they to add a rear seat into? How about rear doors? AC?

Or should I just get the 60 that already has all of that?

Thanks, and I look forward to meeting you once I am an official member!

Only one I know in the club that has experience with diesels (Gehn) but that may be enough. He has a 60.

The troopies are really nice especially if you need room. I would think adding a rear seat would be pretty easy. I don't understand the question about rear doors. You can get a vintage air for around 1k new that will freeze you out.

What are your intentions for the vehicle? Daily drive, wheeling, excursions.....

Welcome to the club.

It will replace my Scout as my daily driver/weekend wheeler/expedition vehicle.

I was wondering about rear doors because I have 2 kids that would be riding in the (retrofitted) rear seat and it would be easier for them to access. I know it would involve cutting and fabrication, and was wondering if anyone had attempted it or if I will be the first.

Also...I couldn't tell, but does anyone know if the top comes off like a 40?

I heard troopies were slow. Just kidding. Tad or Todd or Mike, one of the Fla boys, has a real
sweet troopie. It had seating suitable for kids in the rear. I LOVE the white ones.
They had a big old UN decal on the door. Diesels...gotta love 'em. Last forever.
Our old 240D went 0-60 in mere minutes.
I'd love one of those 75s.
Old Troopies ROCK...period.
Keep us posted on your search. Pics, please, when available. :)

As the official diesel rep of UC :grinpimp: I can do my best to answer any diesel questions you have
What engine do you have? Do you find it has enough power? Can you cruise at highway speeds?
I test drove an FJ62 and was not impressed with the slowness of it. Everyone has since told me that there was probably something wrong with it.
The troopies I have found have the 2H diesels in them.

My 60 had a 2H originally, but i never drove it when it did. It now has a later ('93-'94) 1HZ (4.2L OHC, in directly injected). It has "enough" power but i have never been satisfied with "enough" :D . i can cruise 75-80mph on a rolling interstate with 33" mud tires and the original 3.73 gears but long hills give it a hard time. Nothing a turbo can't fix. All naturally aspirated diesels can be dogs, turbo's really bring them to life. gotta love 23-25mpg highway though!

A cummins 4BT is a good common swap as well for people looking for a slightly more affordable swap and are not concerned with keeping it toyota. I believe an minimum 4" lift is required for this swap for axle/oil pan clearance. Then of course there are the high dollar toyota turbo diesels which are really nice and really expensive.

A turbo'd 2H would be a good motor for a troopie or 60.

Thanks. I'm not really looking for speed (2 Rovers and a Scout will prove that!) but I would like to be able to get out of the way when I pull into traffic or keep up with traffic on the highway. That 62 that I tested could do neither.

What I am really expecting to do is put in a 2nd tank and run it on WVO. My way of sticking it to the man!

I think the automatic of the 62 is the problem. A manual transmission is more efficient. There are lots of people running WVO in both toyota diesels and the cummins. I choose to run biodiesel when i can because as a DD i can't sacrifice the space and practicallity to have the second tank etc. One day maybe i will.

let me know if i can answer anything else for you regarding specific engines etc.

yeah sounds like the 62 you drove, had some issues........... mine is no speed demon for sure but it will run 70- 80 no problems, but as gehn said the autotranny and long hills can slow you down a bit
