I've been saving for a set of ARB lockers but I have some doubts on whether or not I can do the install or not. So I'm now looking at auto lockers. I live in Papua New Guinea and there is no one that I can find that knows how to in stall any kind of locker ( most people I've talked to have never
heard of lockers). I live out in the bush about 4 hr from town, that road is about half paved. I also go out on treks every week out to the villages those roads are at best ruff and muddy at worst impassable. I'm hoping for some input so I can make a informed decision. Thanks

From what I have seen there isn't much difference between installing an ARB v's and auto locker..
Both require the diff head removing and stripping out the innards..
Only thing different will be running the air line for the ARB...
Best bet would be to download the install instructions for both types and compare....

I've read at another website that auto locker such as detroit will kick in when u dont need it such as turning on a slippery tarmac road. This will cause you lose steering control. :steer:

easy lock, lockrite, Ozlock (all the same)
easy to install
down load the shop manual for your truck
review
examine your truck
familurize
and when you feel comfortable then do it.

ARB also means removing the gears and reinstalling properly. for most, this is not an easy job to do.
auto, you just pull the guts and replace. simple job.

you have to be accelerating for the auto lock to kick in.

if the road is THAT slippery then you should be in 4wd H anyway.

what do you think about lokka vs Detroit I know that there is a price difference, but what about function? I think I will lock up both front and back with the front hubs in free wheel there shouldn't be any adverse affects on the tarmac.
Some sort of locker would have been very helpful a few weeks ago at this water crossing.

i would lock the back and leave the front open.
easier to run a winch than change a birf ...
i like the lokka.

Crushers what is the difference between these auto lockers and the lunchbox locker?

Do you have a winch?
If not, I would spend the money on that first.

Lockers get you in to trouble winches get you out.

Douglas I do have a winch 12,000 badlands I just haven't installed it yet. It is amazing however what 30 villagers on the end of a rope can get me out of.
I need to figure a way to install the winch below my bulbar I just haven't found a way that I'm happy with. Any ideas??

most auto locks are the same. Aussi, lockrite, easylock etc.

extend the frame mount out and install the winch.
take a look at my BJ70 build, last couple pages, and you will see how i extended the frame horns so i could mount the low profile 10,000 winch.

ARB have good general installation instructions. Download and have a look before deciding.

The winch should fit between your Chassis rails easily enough, just make a mounting plate, cut a hole where your number plate is and mount the Fairlead there, move your plate to the side or mount on hinges infront of fairlead.

Crushers that looks clean and simple. I looked at mine and I think that if I have a shop make a similar mount I could bolt it to the bottom of the frame rails. According to my measurements it will fit nicely under the bulbar. I will only need to cut out the bottom bar for the fairlead to have clearance. Then cut an access hole In the top of the bulbar to be able to get to the clutch lever.

Do you think bolting to the bottom of the frame rails would be ok?

the frame on the LJ and HD 7* series are the same, so my design will fit your truck.
you need to use the full frame for strength, you don't want to end up ripping the frame in two if you have a really heavy pull.
if you winch fits between the frame rails then box the frame on each end, extend a plate across the bottom and bolt away ... but box the frame for strength.

That sounds good. What mm steel do you recommend?

Well I ordered a set (front and back) of lokkas diff lockers today. There coming from Australia so it will take a week or two or three!! The New Guinea postal system isn't the best.

In the meantime I will be working on the the winch mounting plate. I think I will do a mock up with 1/4in ply (I'm I wood guy) check for proper fit, then disassemble and give it to the work shop for building. I will be going to town next week (3 to 4 hr drive) if I have everything ready it shouldn't take them to long to fab it up.

Nice lj78.
I have had a lockrite in the rear for many years. It hasn't given me any problems except some popping and crashing at times. A great site to look at is www.gearinstalls.com There is tons of great info on setting up your lunch box locker.
Check it out. You want your backlash and carrier bearing preload set up well so you don't have any ring gear deflection. As mentioned the front can cause more damage then good. I have an e locker up front and it takes a football field to turn a circle. You will go further in 2wd locked in the rear then 4wd with open diffs. You will love the locker mod.
Take Care

With the elocker when you disengage the front hubs does it still affect the steering?
