If it was mine , would crap both .
Put in an electric motor , some batteries, and a small diesel generator.
Unconventional, but worth a thought .

Just my 2 cents

Has to be the Cummins.

For whatever my opinion's worth: my preference is reliability, so i'd choose the 1HZ.
However 89GASHOG makes a damn good point: two vehicles (if i understand you correctly), two engines you seem entirely happy with, so have your cake and eat it, too. If you do so, stick the 1HZ in whichever vehicle weighs less, and have the more powerful Cummins earn its keep in the other.
I tend not to trust modern stuff with all the electronic gizmos, but one cannot argue with vastly improved efficiency, power, torque, and lower fuel consumption (well, alright, i argue anyway with reliability). At any rate, if as you say the Cummins 2.8 has been around for a few years and has a good reputation, it sounds like you've the best of both (engine) worlds at your fingertips.

An LS3 makes well over twice the hp and 100 more torque throughout the powerband, weighs 70lbs less and only get a few mpg less than the R2.8... but its not a super cool diesel... I suppose :p

In all seriousness, the R2.8 is pretty neat. Could make a nice base for a build with some tweaks.

Last week I spoke to a gentleman who had an R2.8 in his 60-series. The truck was lifted, had 35” tires, a rack with a clamshell RTT, bumpers and sliders. He said it didn’t have any trouble going 80 on the interstate, and was averaging 25mpg. I see no reason why it wouldn’t do great in a kitted out 80-series.
