Mounting points for 70 series factory flares

I am going to add factory flares to my HZJ-73. I know it is quite an expense and a task, but I am a total fan of the look, so that is that. I have 2 new flares from Toyota and 2 originals. I also have what I believe are all of the different metal clips that attach them. The big fun ahead is getting them mounted in the proper locations.

I plan to go about it by mounting the flares by the two holes on each end of each flare to establish proper location. When that is done, I am thinking of bolting the little metal tabs to the flares and then coating them (gooping them) with something like silicone and mounting up using the two mount holes, and perhaps some tape to pull the top of the flare to the body. After the silicone is cured, I will unbolt the tabs and hopefully pull the flare off with the tabs stuck to the body so I can drill for rivets. After the holes are drilled, I will need to clean up the silicone mess, coat the exposed metal, then rivet on the tabs.

My questions are:

Does anyone know how Toyota attached the flares through the front and rear mount holes? i.e. are they just sheet metal screws? Rivnuts?

Is my idea a good direction? or am I missing an easier way.

Any knowledge, picture, or advice is greatly appreciated!

The flares mount on the fender with mounts. Some have a hole and others have a captive nut.

These mounts are riveted to the fender.

Fenders and support mounts are available from Toyota. It is better to go OEM on this.

Thank you. Yes, I am going OEM. I have all of the mounts, as far as I can tell. I just have to devise the best way to discover the rivet locations. I think the "glue on" method will work- only to locate their positions.

What about the two holes that go completely through the flare- one in the front, and one in the rear. Do those go into a bracket as well? They look like they screw right into the fender or quarter panel

The front hole is for a bolt.

The small rear hole is for a screw that keeps the mud flap in place. If I remember correctly, the big hole is for a mount stud.

If I remember correctly, it is four bolts and a screw for the front fender flare. The rear uses four bolts and a screw as well.

Each flare has cone-shaped stubs that fit into the mounts that do not have captive nuts.

It is possible to mark the location of the mounts from the flare. The measure twice, cut once rule applies.

This is how the flare is mounted.

Make sure you get the non-captive-nut brackets/mounts right. Otherwise, the captive nuts will not align with the bolts.

When mounting the flares, align the stubs first. Then try the bolts.

Remember: the mud guard uses a self-tapping screw. The flare uses bolts.

Last but not least, do not forget the seal strip.

I replaced my rear quarters and cut out a section of the old quarter to use as a template but for both bottom mounts there was no metal left so I used 2 side tape on the bracket and attached it to the flare.I put the flare in place and the 2 sided tape held the bracket until i could drill holes and rivet it in place.I'm too impatient to wait for glue to dry.

Separately, does anyone know if there's a template for the brackets? Or is the glue method the only solution so far

I have not found a template for mounting them thus far. I suspect that information/template was part of original assembly, but not included in a service manual. I would love to be wrong on that point though. I still have not done my flares but hope to tackle it this winter, likely using the double sided tape idea- perhaps even the foam 2 sided emblem tape if I find problems getting the brackets to stay put.

Yeah you are probably right... Found out that the manual was RM183E but it doesn't show the bracket mounting locations.

Still scouring the internet for templates, but I think the best solution is to reference photos of other LJ78/KZJ78s or find a one in person and take down the measurements myself
