Hi.

I have a 1983 HJ60 Norwegian spec cruiser with FF rear axle and 3.70 ratio.

Which ARB locker do I need for both front and rear?

ARBusa.com says RD148 but after some research and found that some had used RD124 and RD33, which are the correct one to use?

Lets say I have nothing other than the locker itself, what else do I need to just install them? I don't think I will change the gear ratio, happy with 3.7 and 35", but haven't done any wheeling yet, at least 3.70 ratio works great for highway and DD ...

Thanks

Hi All:

Which ever Air Locker unit is the current model for a full-floating Land Cruiser axle (this unit will work in both diffs of your HJ60.)

In the olden days (1990s) it was the model RD02, I have not kept-up with the upgraded Air Locker model numbers.

Regards,

Alan

Good, then RD142 it is, but haven't got any answers on this subject yet:

One more thing, would you trust your local Toyota dealership to install ARB lockers on your cruiser?

When you install the ARB RD142 you have to use a larger diameter, 50mm carrier bearing. So if you're replacing the carrier bearings, you might as well replace the pinion bearings at the same time as they all come as a set.

3.70's are fine for wheeling if you're running stock sized tires. Offroad they might be a little too high. Since you're running 35's I'd strongly consider swapping to 4.11's. FJ62's came with 4.11's so those could be sourced relatively cheaply and easily.

I'd trust a Toyota dealer over most other shops unless the shop SPECIALIZES in Differential setup.
Proper diff setup isn't hard, but it can be tricky and is rather time consuming. I did my front ARB w/ 4.88's myself, but I had a VERY experienced guy looking over my shoulder helping me do the setup.

Hope this helps.

They aren't exactly abundant over here. We only got the HJ60 and a few HJ61 (All with FF rear). The 80 series Toyota never sold, they where to expensive with our car tax/import fee system. I'm pretty sure Norway are one of the most expensive countries in the world to buy and own a car ....

So sourcing parts to change gear ratio would be both hard and expensive. Are 3.70 really that useless?
I don't believe I will be wheeling that hard the 5 next years :)

Ended up buying two RD02 since I got a good deal on them, new for 300£ each ...

According to ARB staff there are little difference between them. RD02 and RD33 are 100% equal except that you need a 50mm bearing vs. 45mm bearing and RD142 are just a two piece design of the RD33.

What ARB staff wrote:
ARB said:
“The RD 33 is the 50mm diameter and the RD02 is the 45mm diameter one (so all internal parts are identical). The RD142 is the two-piece design of RD33.

In very, very, very early stages of the RD02 it was held together by just 4 bols instead of 6 or 8 and this design (4 bolts) turned out to be not so resistant as the more current one.”

According to ARB your RD142 would just as easily broke unless you had the 4 or 6 bolts version ....

But I have already both them and thinking of that I saved about 900USD pr. locker (1800USD total) incl. Norwegian tax that are 25% of the buying and shipping price, I feel I will be pretty happy with them :)

So you to know I broke one of my RD02 last year .. ( jumping on locked 40" ) and install 142 ..

While the case strength has increased with the RD02/08 -> RD33 -> RD124 > RD142/RD153 replacements... the biggest improvements are actually with the air supply and seal housing. The RD142/RD153 use vastly superior (easier to install and service) bulkhead assembly's, better o-rings and far easier to install and maintain seal housings (clip style versus screw). While I wouldn't pass up a good deal on the RD02/08 lockers as they are still great setups, its only fair to say the latest offerings are superior in many ways that will result in more trouble free installation and operation.

I started a tech page with some of the air locker lineage, its missing a bunch of stuff, eventually I'll get back to it :D

Check it out here: Cruiser Outfitters Tech Page

Nice resource Kurt ... to contribute RD23 was 8" locker working for front in 80 series or front and rear in SA pickups ( hi lux for us ) or LCII ( or Bunderas )

10-4, I can't quite remember why I didn't add a note for the RD23 but it was a very popular seller for us for quite some time. I've got a fairly thick book of old ARB install guides and locker manuals that I wanted to eventually scan and add to that page. ARB's corporate site does a fantastic job with new product tech guides on the lockers but many of the techs were not around even 5 years ago thus don't have much hands on with the older lockers. I figured scans of the old manuals would be helpful.

about books .. I have old 2001 catalog .. kinda treasure now ..

I have some from the mid 90's. SOR, MAF, Downey, Con-Fer, ARB and many others :D

Old Thread revival! Since I was looking for differences in RD02 and new RD142.
I've got a new, unused RD02 I installed on a 3.70 gear then promptly upgraded to 4.11 and factory
4 pinion LS from a BJ74 which have suited for a few years.
Christmas this year and bought a new RD142 for my FF 4.11 and decided I'd swap the sitting
on the shelf RD02 back to a 4.11.
I presume the rubber o rings will be fine as its been just sitting but with gear oil so it hasn't dried out.
@cruiseroutfit Did ARB change the rubber o ring dimensions? Should I have an issue can I expect to
be able to order a set of o rings for RD142 and have them fit? BTW the diff kits were just ordered from
you an hour ago. Happy New Year!

Yes, dimensions and profile of the O-Ring have changed over time. 45mm, 50mm, round and quad rings, and some early stuff that was different too.

Do you stock RD02 O-rings? and RD142 O-rings? I'll call in the morning if you are open and add to my order.
Wouldn't be bad to have a pair of spares.

We do! Plenty of each
