A place that i did not look, until long after I bought it... along the rear frame directly adjacent to the muffler.

Your talking about the C-channel piece that is on the interior of the frame? Jason (@reevesci) sells replacement pieces.
 
Nope that is pretty universal I think... Only way you could avoid that is if the vehicle was in a dry environment its entire existence and never saw wet road, rain, snow, etc. EVER!.


Strangely mine has been in SE Alaska, a very wet and snowy place, for 14+ years now and it still doesn't have any rust in the roof, rear wheel arches or quarter panels. Front fenders are starting to go, however, and tail/lift gate are seeing some spots.
