I have one of those steering wheels for you if I can find it. With an adapter for an S-10 steering column.

Cheap, ... if you want it!

Michael,

Obviously, my opinion only, but I think the Grant wheel looks, well... cheap.

I have "piano player hands" in that my fingers are long, and I really don't like thin steering wheels. I much prefer a thicker wheel, and with a nice leather cover. So, on several of my older vehicles I've replaced the stock steering wheel. My brand of choice is LeCarra. They used to be made in France, but my understanding is the company was bought by Lokar. LeCarra made lots of different steering wheel designs in various diameters and colors. They also offered a huge number of adapters for different vehicles. I haven't followed what has happened since the Lokar purchase, but I look for used LeCarra wheels on ebay.

Sometimes they sell for pretty reasonable prices, so it pays to be patient. I don't know if Lokar offers this, but LeCarra used to have a recovering service where you could send in an old wheel and have the cover replaced.

I’ve been sorta out of the loop for awhile. But as I recall Grant made a steering wheel adapter for a Toyota Corolla that had the exact Landcruiser spline, check into it.

I’m really satisfied with the 70 series wheel with my mini truck steering box and saginaw pump. I did put a leather cover from amazon. Like a new car. I think the wheel was around 170.00 from japan.

One of the reasons I searched and found a Land Cruiser steering wheel was it did not need an adapter and did not really like what was offered in the after market.

will the smaller wheel make it easier to handle "steering wise" when you have added power steering. Is it worth the effort to change to smaller wheel, even if its 70 series wheel?
Thanks
Michael

The original wheel is 46 years old and all 3 spokes had cracks at the hub. I did not have power steering before the 16" wheel provided more leverage to turn. With power steering and the size of the piston it will take a lot effort to turn the wheel so a smaller wheel will be fine but wont affect handlining.
I am tall the smaller wheel will give me more room.

What wheel and adapter did you end up going with?

did you need an adapter for the 70 wheel? And if so which one and where would I be able to procure said adapter? Or what if any DIY adaptation is required? I've found some fj70 wheels available on ebay. Thanks Thanks and Thanks

I found a FJ70 steering wheel for my FJ40 with FJ80/105 power steering upgrade that is smaller then the stock wheel it was outfitted with. View attachment 3924903

I haven't installed yet. But I was told when I was looking at an FJ80 wheel they would work. I am waiting to put the new turn signal and high beam switch on then I will check the splines for a match.

The way these trucks are modular the wheel and column should have the same spline.

Sorry dumb question but do I have to modify the turn signal/highbeam switch if I change the wheel to the 70 Prada steering wheel? Can I keep that stock and still functioning? Many thanks

The back of the wheel has a contact ring that looks the same size as the one on the 40 wheel so that tab on the turn signal should match up. The 70 wheel should slip onto the splines and seat against the turn signal switch.

The switch had not been delivered before I left for GA and did not do a test fit with the old one.

Since the truck is 46 years old seemed like a good time to replace the switch before I put the wheel back on..

This is how I left it before I left it before I left for GA. Everything should go back together just fine.

Went to town to get shorter M5-.8 Allen head screws and installed the new turn signal/high beam switch. The 3/4" length were too long so replaced them with 5/8".

Measured both contact rings on the FJ40 wheel and the FJ70 wheel and they are exactly the same.

Looks like I will have to transfer the roll pins or what ever is needed to cancel the blinkers with the wheel.

Did a test fit with the FJ70 wheel and it dropped right onto the splines like the FJ40 wheel does, no adapters needed when using Land Cruiser steering wheels from different series. That was one reason to use a Land Cruiser wheel instead of after market because of the modularity between series.
