Was told I had to go to a month-long course 2000 miles away, they wanted me to fly down, naahhhhhh.

I was in a bit of a rush, would love to spend a lot more time on the way back, doubt it's pan out but gonna try.

Nothing too exciting in Kansas, but the wife and I managed to get some light wheeling in on our last camping trip. Definitely a 4wd only area. My buddy in his lifted Grand Cherokee had quite a bit of trouble where we rolled right over the rocks. Great trip.

For Kansas, that's some beautiful scenery! There are a lot of us in KC, myself included, that are always looking for new places to go. Can you throw up some details on where this is, what kind of trip to expect, and any maps of you have them?

Thanks,

I drove through eastern Kansas and Western Missouri and was amazed with the land out there. It was of course in May and everything was green and lush.

So, I’m not too tech savvy but here are coordinates to the nearest main road. Marked Location خرائط Google‏

You can take the access road south from the paved road and it will go back to the hiking trail. We always camp back there instead of the normal campgrounds. Great area to swim or kayak and just relax. I’ve been camping there since I was 17 or 18 and only seen people a handful of times on the trail, and never seen other stationary campers. If this link doesn’t work, let me know amd I’ll get your info and get better coordinates and directions. Alternately, it’s in the iOverlander app under Camp Osoba/Hidvegi

As far as how rough the road is, it’s not too bad. A lift would definitely help but I’ve done it in a stock cruiser. You’ll probably get pinstripes and if it’s rained recently it’ll get interesting. There’s an old wooden quasi bridge that is pretty rough. Overall, if you go wheeling for wheelings sake, this will be a breeze. If you aren’t used to wheeling it will be a little harder. Watch out for copperheads if it’s warm! No facilities, and natural source water so bring plenty of your own, or a purifier.

Edit: To give you an idea of how hard it is, my wife won’t let us take her slightly lifted LR3 back “Because it might break something.” Ha! But it’s not bad for us. My buddies Grand had a lot of wheel spin and had to back up and use momentum a few times, where my bigger tires and rear locker let me idle over with minimal throttle input. He lifted a tire a few times, I don’t believe I did at all.

Rainy night and morning at Nat'l Bridge/Slade Ky...
Saw the "Slade" reference and had to look at the profile. Crazy and awesome to see another 80 on Mud from Loveland, OH!

Most recently, Moab in July ‘17. Headed back this July as well. Threw the Ducati on the back for good measure. Rode it on the Million Dollar Highway passing through Denver. Good times. The wife approves as you can see.

Lots of improv camping in this thread. Can you basically pitch your tent anywhere in the US or do different states have different rules?

The further west you go, the more public land you’ll find. The state I live in, Kansas, has very little public access land. Most of the state is private property and you can’t go there without permission. Special areas, scenery wise, are usually public land in a lot of states. Just depends on the rules as far as camping and such.

As a Missourian who travels through western MO and all of Kansas to get to Colorado and beyond, this makes me giggle. Ha. I guess you don't know what you've got when you lived in the same state your entire life. I think Missouri and to a lesser extent, Kansas are ugly to drive through. We all like you guys out west! Actually, Kansas I find much more enjoyable to drive through. Longer views from I-70.

One thing I love about living in Oregon. Super easy to find camping anywhere without cost or restrictions. :)

Great write up my friend. Turns out I'm about 150 miles from there, so easily doable on a weekend trip.

What else is down there to do? Are there other backwoods routes we can kill a day or two doing? Any mountain biking if you know?
